My First Winter - Garage or Shrink Wrap
Our last place had a one car attached garage, that my wife parked in pretty much year round. I took it over for a couple weeks right before ice out so I could get everything all prepped and ready to go, as well as for a week or so at the end of the season to get it all cleaned up ( and make sure it was properly dried out), then it was stored in an unheated shed at my other property. We now have no garage at our new place, but I have a wonderful attached, covered lean to off the side of my barn where I store my boat all year, as well as my tractor. Keeps them out of the elements ( including the sun), and I can access it whenever I want to do stuff to it. For me, it makes sense to let the truck sit outside all year, and keep the big toys out of the weather, as I’ll own the boat and tractor many more years than the truck. After seeing the effects of freeze/thaw/refreeze from my wife’s car parked in the heated garage every day, and the ensuing rust from all that snow/salt melt, I’d rather just keep the truck frozen all year and keep the boat nice and dry without having to worry about it.

Winter 2023-2024
Started here today. The real pain in the butt is that I had the boat all loaded up last night with tools, ready to go do a small job at a cottage out on Georgian Bay today. Guess I’ll wait a few days till stuff melts. I know this isn’t gonna stick around yet, and I only need about three days to get this job done, but man I wish I didn't have to see it yet.

“He’s just a cute little baby”! Try to take him off that bed though and there’s a good chance you’ll come out if it with less skin on your arms than before you tried 😄.

With your pup underneath looking up at that tasty meal, it almost looks like a reverse glass bottom boat!

23 October 2023~ Last Bass of the Year
I’m one of those guys that often waits till I can’t back the boat in the lake due to ice being too thick. Some years it gets put away sooner, especially when I had to drive further to the lake, and they started spreading salt on the roads, but now that I live about 30 sec from a decent launch on a half decent lake, I’m hoping to get out well into November. Last year was the 11th, I’m hoping to at least get that far into the month before I have to pack it in. I’ve had some fantastic days in late November here, still hammering on them in less than 10’ of water if we get a couple calm, slightly warmer days.

I’ll bet he wouldn’t do that if he was a ten pointer 😄

Half of our girls are now starting to earn their keep. One’s been laying for a couple weeks now, the other just started the other day. I expect the remaining two will join in any day now, then it’ll be green eggs and ham for breakfast every day 😄.

Come on up for a drive, I’ll have plenty of steaks and moose burger in the freezer.

2023 Moose Hunt Camp
Oh boy, does it ever! There’s been as many as 5 moose hanging off it at one time, and more deer than you could imagine.

2023 Moose Hunt Camp
It’s based on a points system. You get a point for every year you apply and don’t draw a tag, the more points you get the better your odds. The province is divided up into wildlife management units, basically different sections of land ( thousands of acres each), and they give out so many tags per unit based on their research to determine how many animals can be taken each year from each unit. In our wmu, you need about 18 points min to get an adult moose tag. That can seem like a long time to wait, but if you’re in a large group ( we have about 18 guys total), then it’s easier. We currently have about 6 guys with at least 18 points, and many more just under that, so we’re pretty much guaranteed a tag every year. You apply individually, and when we see what tags we got, we have a window of time to actually choose what ones we want for the year, and “return” the ones we don’t want, so we don’t burn points. It seems complicated, but actually works quite well.

2023 Moose Hunt Camp
Just got back today from four days of fun at our hunt camp. Went in Saturday afternoon to spend a couple days doing a bunch of jobs around camp, with the actual hunt beginning Monday morning. We were done and had the guns unloaded and packed back up by 9:30 Monday morning! One of the guys got a dandy, the older members said it was the largest bull they’ve shot out there, and they’ve shot tons of moose out there over the many years of hunting. We took the four quarters of meat to the butcher yesterday and they weighed 631 lbs. which would put it at around 1200 lbs live weight. He had a broken paddle on one side, that looked like it was broken while still in velvet so unlikely that it was from fighting with another bull. On the walk back to camp after our “long hunt”, a couple of the guys saw another slightly smaller bull standing broadside at 30 yds, but we only had one tag, so we’ll leave him till next year 😄. In the last two seasons, our camp has hunted a grand total of 32 min to get two nice bulls, needless to say there’s quite a few moose in the area. We spent the next couple days just working around the camp, doing repairs to the buildings, rebuilding some atv bridges over creeks, and just hanging around telling stories and enjoying a few beverages with good friends. It was a wonderful time, and we get to do it all over again in about two weeks when our deer rifle season starts, and now we have a bunch of chores done at camp so we can do more hunting ( there’s way more deer and deer tags available so we won’t be quite done in 15 min 😏).

Went out to the coop this afternoon and found this, our first one! We got them as chicks in May, so we new it’d be any day now when eggs started to show up. It’s pretty small, but that’s to be expected for the first few eggs, but a really cool coloured one. These hens are called olive eggers, a cross between two breeds that are supposed to make eggs this colour.

Lovely crisp fall morning for a leisurely tractor ride. Went to my brothers about 5 miles away to get a back blade off his tractor. The fall country scenery is definitely nicer at 20mph on a tractor than flying along in a car.

Star Link satellites
Saw them for the first time here last weekend. We were at our year end baseball team party, sitting around the fire in the evening and saw a whole “train” of them go right over us in the clear night sky. Was pretty interesting to see. We have a pretty much completely open sky at my house to see them, but I just haven’t been out after dark much to look. Couple more months and we’ll have nothing but dark ( at least it seems that way ?), so we might get more chances to see them.

Had a scare.
Glad they finally caught it and she’s on the mend. I’ve heard many instances of similar things happening, especially with women. Goes to show that sometimes we need to have things looked at maybe a second time, and to trust what your body is trying to tell you. Hope her “shoulders” don’t bother her any further.

One field down, one to go. Man this new tractor and 5-1/2’ brush hog makes quick work of the weeds! Fun way to spend the evening after a long day at work too, just crank the tunes and go “hogging”.

Coping with chronic heart ache ~
That’s just great man! You hear so many times how people’s lives get ripped apart from illness, it’s so nice to hear about someone beating the ever loving crap out of it for a change. Way to go Lynn, keep kicking that scoundrel to the dirt ??.

Got my new toy delivered today! Got the snowblower off, and the new brush hog on and even did a couple passes in the one field after dinner. Man this thing is gonna be fun ??.

3038, with a blower, and a brush hog. Gonna get pallet forks later this fall for moving skids of stuff around, and a tiller in the spring. We have 25 acres, half of that is fields that I want to cut, and eventually we want to start a cut flower farm so I’ll need to till up some areas.

One of the best feelings in fishing
@Way2slow, there’s definitely that aspect of it as well. Nothing better than sharing a day on the water with family or friends, and I have several that have never had a nice, fairly new fishing boat, so I always enjoy giving them a good time and memory on the water, but for me there’s also the times where I need to be alone, to just decompress and forget about work, and life’s other “issues” that we all deal with from day to day.

Actually it was the tractor monkey! Got a new John Deere heading my way this week. Now tractor attachments, that’s gonna be an expensive monkey ?

Question for my Northern friends
Lots of maple syrup made around me in the spring. We’ve done it a few times over the years, it’s fun but can be a TON of work! One of my buddies has a pretty nice sugar shack, with a big fancy boiler, and plastic lines all over the bush running from trees straight to the boiler. Couple years ago he had a moose barrel through the sugar bush and take out half his lines! He makes a pile of it every year. I’m partial to the darkest of syrups, just the slightest hint of “ burnt” to it, and nice and thick ??

2023 deer hunt
Opens Oct 1 here, but I doubt I’ll get out with the bow this year ( haven’t in a few years, just too busy). Our two week rifle season is first half of November, I’ll be going to our hunt camp for several days to enjoy the time away from work, and spend some time catching up with about 8 other guys that are just a blast to hang around. Can’t wait!

I have never...
Never caught a spotted bass, of course living in central Ontario it’s not an easy thing to accomplish ( especially when you don’t travel too far, like ever).
