  1. Great book! Another major consideration on rivers is current. Smallmouth are in it or around it; largemouth tend to avoid it.
  2. Well, this isn't very scientific, but if you just want to eye-ball it, 1/4 backing, 3/4 braid. If you want to be more frugal, half and half. If precise is what you are looking for, fully spool your reel with the same diameter of cheap line and pull off 60-80 yards of line. I like a little extra (80 yards) so I never feel the connecting knot and I have a little margin in case the there is a professional overrun that requires surgery!
  3. They don't cast very far when the bail is closed!
  4. Sharp knife. For "tag ends" finish them off with a lighter. It takes a little practice, but it works great. Move the tag to the flame, not the other way around.
  5. Great article: http://www.bassresource.com/hank-parker-fishing/spinnerbait-fishing-experiment.html Do you use a trailer and/or trailer hook?
  6. Welcome aboard!
  7. Welcome aboard! Right now is usually Prime Time on the Tennessee River, especially below Pickwick Dam. If you are interested, I might meet you there one Saturday. Send me a PM and we can discuss specifics. -Kent
  8. Welcome aboard!
  9. The diameter of the Seaguar #10 AbrazX is only .010" which is going to result in the line digging into the spool. My suggestion is #50 Suffix 832 as the main line with the fluorocarbon as a leader. Otherwise, I think Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 is a better choice for mainline without a leader.
  10. Rage Eeliminator and Lizard are two that I use. I also like a heavy egg weight, at least 1/2 oz, but usually 1 oz.
  11. Cavitron Black on Black
  12. Send a PM to the Administrator, Glenn May. Also, Big O.
  13. Win or lose...This is the worst defensive performance I have ever seen.
  14. 51e on a 7' MH All Star This will work just fine.
  15. Fantastic guarantee, but one you won't be using. I have been fishing the ShakE2 and Pro Series since they were first introduced. Try a couple and see for yourself!
  16. Confusing, huh? These "What's Best" threads always get bogged down in brand loyalty, but a big part of that is experiece with a brand over time. To put this in perspective, whenever we have a "Favorites" poll, the results are always +/- 60% Shimano vs. the field. You can argue that these polls are not scientific and usually only have a hundred votes or so vs. our 38,000 members. So, judge that as you like. My specific recommendation is a Shimano Symetre 2500FJ. If $100 or so new is too much, "gently used" is offered on our Flea Market quite often for around $75.
  17. Great post! I'll just add that for some guys (like me), "moving" lures are more comfortable to fish on baitcasting reels.
  18. The reserviors of the Tennessee River have been his "honey holes" for years and they are open to the public 24/7/365. An important aspect of targeting bigger fish is selecting the best lakes or rivers availabe to you in your area. We don't have the same opportunities here in the Mid South as some of the guys in the "Big Bass States", but it is pretty well known which water gives you the best chance at a trophy fish.
  19. WOW! Nice fish.
  20. A hot bite can certainly level the playing field. Something I like to do is change up the colors using the same bait. I did this last summer ledge fishing on Pickwick. The answer that day was purple worms only!
  21. Tebow took the Broncos to the playoffs last year and won the first game. He was the most exciting player in the NFL that year. Don't write him off quite yet. He was not really given much of a chance to play this year even though the Jets were pitifull. There aren't a dozen "NFL caliber" quaterbacks in the league. I think Tim Tebow is better than most of the remaining twenty.
  22. Try the MegaBug, you will REALLY like it!
  23. This is how it works in Tennessee: "Make My Day" http://www.realclearpolitics.com/news/ap/politics/2012/Mar/27/tenn__has_stand_your_ground_self_defense_law.html
  24. For the most part, that's true for any knot. I use the Palomar for single hooks, but it's too cumbersome for larger lures with multiple treble hooks. For the bigger lures I like the Pitzen. http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/pitzen-knot p.s. Play with the new knot I invented and tell me what you think: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/110842-new-knot-the-big-o/
