Braid can be a pain in the rear...I have been experimenting with a number of applications for the last 9 months or so. Here's my take: 1. No leader unless you fish gin clear water, mussels or what seem to be sharp edge structure (rocks and ledges). 2. The impact on jig fishing is dramatic. 3. The "feel" when fishing soft plastics is improved, but not nearly as much as with jigs. 4. I hate braid in the wind...PERIOD! I have braid (PP 50/12) on three rigs: 1. Jig rig, no leader. 2. Weighted soft plastics, fluorocarbon leader. ( For weightless presentations, spinning tackle and #6 Hybrid) 3. Small swimbaits (Mattlures Baby Bass), no leader. 8-)

Great come-back! Nice fish, too. This is a very informative thread. It seems to me that we can boil it down to structure and lures. I know they say location is everything, but... In a 50 acre pond, I suspect the bass move around a bit more than you might think. Although my ponds certainly have "spots" that consistently hold big bass, I occasionally get surprised! So, for my money we're back to lures and presentation. The evidence suggests a strong preference for shad. Solution: Mattlures Baby Bass. Secondly, a big "bottom" presentation: GMAN 3/4 oz Mop jig with a Rage Tail Lobster trailer. Jigs may not always be the best choice on any given day, but they produce everywhere, all of the time. And one more thought...You may have seen Big O's post from a recent outing. Dude "got lucky" fishing a Thumper. I think you should be fishing his big worm, too! 8-)

A "crankbait" rod can be used for all treble hooks: topwater, jerkbaits and swimbaits. For medium weight lures, the majority of most people's tackle, Medium Power and Moderate Action is what I would suggest. These are mine: Avid AVC66MF for jerkbaits and topwater. The rod is rated Fast Action, but the tip is soft. That combination makes working these lures easy and fun. Avid AVC70MM for nearly everything else. Lamiglas SR705R for bigger baits and deep divers. 8-)

Hmm... That surprises me, but I can't really say much since I haven't been able to tie the knot. :-/

Well, I often see groups of largemouth herding bluegill against the bank. It's interesting to see, but I have never gotten them to bite. 8-)

I suggest buying one rig this year and saving for another next year. Be patient and keep an eye on our Flea Market. For baitcasting, St. Croix Avid AVC68MXF ($180 MSRP ~ $125); Shimano Curado 200E7 (~$135). Spinning tackle: Avid AVS70MF ($125); Shimano Stradic 2500 FI ($120) or if you can save a little more money,the Stradic 2500 CI4. 8-)

Most knots have many similarities. Your knot is basically secured at the bottom instead of the top. Additionally, the loops are inside as opposed to outside on the 16-20. So, different but close in terms of structure. BTW. I haven't mastered this knot yet, but if you are "into knots", learn to tie the Sebile: 8-)
