Congratulations! I caught my first of the year last Saturday. 8-)

How light is too light?
Light line is only appropriate in open water. Most of my smallmouth fishing fits this criteria. The majority of my largemouth fishing does not. The conditions you describe call for much heavier equipment to "move" the fish. 8-)

Anyone know about the Lake Fork Magic Shad?
Hmm... Try it on a Sworming Hornet. Cast, settle to the bottom. Lift and let sink on slack line...repeat. When fish are inactive, this is my #1 technique. http://www.sworminghornetlures.com/ 8-)

Kind of a stupid question
I would send them back. Have the seller replace or clean them up. Covered in oil is not "normal". If you decide to keep them, have the reels professionally serviced. You don't "practice" on new Curados. >

Buy a Zara Puppy, black on silver: http://www.bass.co.za/images/zara_puppy_black_shiner.jpg Cast on or near structure or cover. Let the lure sit for at least 30 seconds, then twitch and sit until you feel you are "out of the zone". In terms of numbers, this is the most productive hard bait I have ever fished. 8-)

Cold, stained and slow. Another cold front moving in today. I doubt you will run into much pressure from the locals.

trimming jigs
Experiment for yourself. I trim some skirts and weedguards, but leave others untrimmed. I don't think it makes any difference! :
