Fishing equipment donations.
Yes, our local conservation board does a wonderful job with outdoor days for kids. My excess tackle isn't really appropriate, so I buy and donate what they need when I can.

Latest Catch Pics Thread
It's fun to mess around with this stuff on days when not fishing but I'm not sure it is the best idea ever. Thank you for your compliment. The frogs connected with braid or a limp steel leader tangle on the cast. I found more stiff wire and made another one this morning so we'll see... BUT I'm not seeing an increase in bites with the double over a single so why use it if it's not more productive? It's great to have an opportunity at 2 bass at once but that is gonna be rare I'm pretty sure. I've been using this for a month now and have caught 2 doubles and many singles on it but I catch plenty with just 1 frog. I will keep playing around with the Harry 'n Charlie rig just to see what works.

I'm pretty sure they are wacking them at the same time. All I see is the explosion in the duckweed and get them out in open water and there's TWO! If the hooks are pointing in toward the center of the frog I bend them out. I'm not seeing any increase in bites with the double rig. I catch just as many on a single frog and it's much easier to cast. So far the only advantage is the opportunity to catch a double, which is fun but rare.

Double frog rig
Got some wire leaders but they don't cast well, tangle on tbe cast same as connecting them with braid. The first one I made used hardware wire and it was stiff so the frogs casted like one but it got boogered up after catching several bass and broke. Need to find stiff leaders I think.

In Praise of Dinks
My Granpa used to say, "There's little bass, and there's big bass, but there ain't no bad bass."

Double frog rig
@RRocket. I use a River 2 Sea frog for Harry. It has a wire tbat holds a rattle which I take off and tie the connector to then I put a compact frog for Charlie. I used a popper for that on the first one. The wire got boogered up and broke so used braid to tie them together on the next one but it tends to tangle on the cast. I will get a stiff wire leader to do it right. No reason for which frogs to use, just thought it would cast better with a big one in front and a small one in back. Love to hear your ideas and results!

lazy ike wiggly jig
@bloom Yes! I was born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa where Lazy Ike was born. They had a plant and my fishing buddys Mom worked there and would bring home sacks of "blems". Us kids would put hooks on 'em and catch lots of fish! In the 70's I started a Bass Club and we would have tournaments (pretty informal) and we had a kid show up and whoop us all with a Zebco rod and reel and a Lazy Ike! Great memories!!!

Jitterbug Tuning?
@Bazoo I have the same experience. I've tried fooling with the line tie and the blade but haven't found a solution. Also, Lunkerhunt makes a Yappa Bug soft bodied frog with a Jitterbug blade. It is a smaller bait that I use in the weedy lakes I fish. It does the same thing you describe! Maybe it has something to do with the speed of the retrieve, too slow or too fast messes it up.

Double frog rig
Got some good ones yesterday on the double frog rig. I call this rig "Harry 'n Charlie" after @Bazoo posted about old time Bassmaster. I wish I had a Harry 'n Charlie hat! The front frog is Harry and the rear frog is Charlie. Kinda like the stories, Harry stirs up trouble and Charlie takes a beatin for it! Most of the bites are on Charlie.

Is Fishing a WaStE oF TiMe?
If you think fishing is a waste of time you are missing the whole point. Learning how to catch fish and understanding the natural way is the point.

Looking back on the old days of B.A.S.S.
@Bazoo I miss those days too! Loved the Harry 'n Charlie adventures. Such an era of growing and learning about bass fishing. Miss Ray Scott too.

Double frog rig
@TheSwearingAngler I used wire from the hardware store. It is stiff enough to not tangle on the cast. I think after being kinked up a few times it will break. On the next one I build will use those wire leaders that people use to prevent bite off's from pike. Please let me know what you come up with and results.

Trolling for bass?
Yes, I troll, but cast more. I think trolling produces those bass that the scopers have discovered.

Thermocline on electronics?
Yes. You can verify this with a temp probe. Research "thermoclines". Glenn has info on BR.

Double frog rig
I had the same concerns about the wire also. Experience is that the majority of frog bites are that the bass engulfs the frog from the rear. I've fished this rig for a couple of weeks and caught many bass (singles) and most have been on the rear frog (not all). I have missed bites on it but miss some bites no matter what frog I'm using. Also, I have not seen any increase in bites with the double rig. I had hoped the double rig would give more of a presence or commotion on a thick mat. The first rig I made using braid to connect the frogs but too many tangles on the cast. No tangles with the wire. Will it produce another double? Maybe. But I'll take 'em one at a time! Yesterday on the double rig.

Double frog rig
@casts_by_fly It's a 6-10, Heavy action, Fast flex. 40# 832 braid. I would use a longer rod but I fish in a small boat, setting down.

Do you sabotage yourself?
@Craig P Yer not crazy, yer in good company. Al Linder tells that Ron Lindner would change his lure or presentation as soon as he started catching fish. His reasoning: "How are ya gonna learn if ya don't."

Do You Believe in Bite Windows?
This is all good info. I think bite windows are real, but here is another thought: @JackstrawIIIYou say the fish were there all the time, but I say a group of fish moved into the area you were fishing and you started catching them. Then they moved on, or the commotion of catching spooked them, or you caught the active ones, or the fish you caught and released alerted the group of fish and they quit biting. I have no data to back this up, just my opinion. I think groups of bass move more then we think. I keep moving changing speed and depth until the bass give me clues to where they are and what they want. If I run into an adult bass I will flog that area good and stay as I keep catching them or move on when the bite stops. That area where you intercepted those bass is always a good place to try. I think this is called a "milk run".

Double frog rig
@A-Jay It was a double whopper as they cracked those frogs at the same time! Blew duckweed for a mile!

Double frog rig
Love froggin'! I've added rattles, bb's, etc. I catch just as many with a frog out of the package so don't see an advantage with the mods. It's fun to play with so I rigged up a double frog rig in hopes that it would increase the presence on a thick mat. I've caught a bunch of fish with it and always hoped it would produce a double! Yesterday I got my wish!

New to bass fishing... asking for help setting up the right rig
A medium or medium heavy rod with a baitcaster and 12 # mono will work for most techniques. Practice casting because most bass fishing is casting to targets, either ones you can see or ones you can't. Get some basic lures and learn where they are most effective. Then spend your time and effort in learning the bass and how to find them. This is the important part. It's been said many times before, you can't catch bass if you're not fishing where they are. All this info is here at BR. Concentrate on the basics and be careful you don't get pulled into the information quagmire as you are starting. Good luck on your wonderful journey in bass fishing! I'll say one more thing. Have reverence and respect for the animal we pursue.

The Term "Flippin & Pitchin"
F & P are very effective and I used to do a lot of when I could stand up. Now I fish out of a small boat and can't stand anymore. I do what I call "dippin'". A 10 foot rod with a baitcaster with 40# braid. Move slowly and quietly near heavy cover and methodically dip your jig or worm into places where you couldn't cast to. I use a reel with a flippin switch so I can hold the rod tip over the spot and let the bait down horizontally and can engage the reel instantly when I get a bite. The long rod is awkward as heck in a tiny boat, I usually hand over hand the rod to land a big fish, but it is pretty effective in dirty, shallow, water with heavy cover such as weeds or wood. I think this is kinda how Dee Thomas did it back in the early days of flippin'. Anyway this is one way to "flip" if you don't have a wide, stable boat and you are old and have strength and balance issues and must sit down.
