Down but not out!
Take care Catt. Hoping everything is ok.

should i almost always hold the rod tip high? (i usually hold it low... pretty limited success, lol)
If I'm fishing a t rig or jig, Ive had the best results by keeping my rod tip up, and work the bait between 10:00, and 12:00 position. I can see my line where it enters the water this way, and feel strikes better also.

Finesse vs Power Fishing
I think both these types of fishing have a time and place. If bass won't react to larger power type baits, you can often catch them by slowing down, and downsizing your baits. These days, guys fish finesse on casting and spinning rigs. I wonder if we should still call it finesse fishing anymore.

Dock Baits
I don't skip very often. For docks, a light t rig plastic worm is my favourite.

What has changed so much in 70 years to reduce my daily catches from hundreds ?
I tend to think that tournaments don't hurt the bass population overall. Not everyone catches fish in tournaments. I also don't believe the Senko or any bait is sure fire. If that were the case, you would never see guys getting skunked.

It's true. You can't catch fish where there's not any. It's been this way forever.

East wind means no fish ???
Winds from the south, the hook goes in they're mouth. Heard this as a kid also.

If you had it to do over again....
I started around 1971 with an ABU 5000. No thumb bar or any magnetic controls. If I had to do it over I wouldn't change anything. A reel like that teaches you to gradually loosen your spool tension, and use your thumb. Learning on a reel like this makes newer reels seem easy.

I Should Be Fishing
Today, I should be fishing but, it won't happen today because, 1. I've got a bathroom faucet to fix. 2. I need to get the mower tuned up and ready to mow. 3. The wind caught my storm door this winter, now I need to fix it. 4. I promised a friend I'd help him fix a couple of shingles that blew off his roof. 5. My deck needs a couple of new boards put on. And on and on. My tackle is ready to go, and I'm more than ready to get out there. But, I've got chores to do which can't be neglected. Today, I'll try and get these chores done. Maybe tomorrow, I'll go fishing. Today, I'll daydream about it while I do my chores. But I know I should be fishing. Does anyone else think this way?

anyone have no interest in fishing with sonar, and maybe prefer the 'old wayze?'
Some older members here are aware of triangulation, and have used it. It can still work, though slower. Any electronics speed up the process of fish location. But, they won't catch the fish for you.

Items you'd least want to fish without ?
I use mono line, so keep line clippers around my neck on a thin rope. Forgot to mention pfd, sun screen, and Channelock needle nose pliers. I've had the same needle nose pliers for at least 20 yrs.In hot weather I'm wearing a Magellen fishing shirt. Plenty of pockets, and good in the sun. I'll sweat a little in this shirt, but a slight breeze cools you off pretty quick. As I've gotten older I'm more worried about the sunburn on hot days. Coffee in the morning, then water. Plenty of it on hot days.

Sunglasses, cap, sharp pocket knife, small tool kit.

Bed time?
If I wake up to pee at 3:00, I might as well stay up and make coffee. I'll have a hard time going back to sleep. Some nights I can stay up later, other times I'm lucky to make it through the 10:00 news.

Bed time?
I've .mostly retired now but still get up at 5 30 each day. So many years of this makes my internal alarm clock work. I'm usually in bed by 10 or so.Unless I'm going going fishing at sun up. Then I'll go to bed earlier.

Why do you fish?

What got you "started" on your favorite brands? Nostalgic story time
My older brother gave me a red ABU 5000 when I was around 13. Before that I used a Zebco 33. Both are good reels. Now, I still use ABU 4600C , along with Lew's casting reels. Spinning reels Ive owned and used mostly Shimano, and now have a Lew's spinning reel also. Also have an old ABU Zebco Cardinal 4 which I've retired now. I'd say Shimano is probably my favourite brand. Rods I've used are Berkeley, ABU, St Croix, and Fenwick.

Cynical
Apologies for the sad face here. I meant to like this response.

Cynical
Tom, so many folks here appreciate your comments, years of experience and insight regarding fishing. If some guys don't, ignore them. There's plenty of us around here that like and respect what what you have to say.

Thankful !!
My dad fished whenever he could, but was busy working much of the time. So my older brother was the one who got me going on bass fishing. Fishing in the evenings on our grandpas farm here in Missouri. We stayed on the farm in the summer helping with chores. There wasn't a whole lot of things to do in the evenings, so fishing was what we always did. I've been grateful for the experience ever since.
