I don't hear a lot of talk here on BR or in general about Mepps or other inline spinners for bass. They offer a different profile than other bass spinnerbaits, and can be great spinners to use at certain times. If I had to choose one, I'd pick the Mepps Black Fury, size 3 or 4, in chartreuse or yellow dot pattern. I can cast either one of this size with a bait casting outfit. Smaller ones work well with spinning gear. A great scenario for these spinners is where shallow water meets deeper water, with weeds that grow to within one or two ft of the surface. Make a long cast and bring the Mepps over this area, keeping it as close to the weed tops as you can. Keep a tight grip on your rod. Are there any others here who still throw a Mepps? What are your favourite sizes and colors?
  3. RIP Ray Scott. And thank you for what you did for the sport of bass fishing.
  4. Plastic worm, light t rig, various colors and styles.
  5. Catt, my dad had a reel mower when I was a kid. He knew how to sharpen it, and when sharp worked pretty good for a small area. If it was dull, forget it. Took forever to mow a 10x10 patch of grass.
  6. My wife loves to mow, so I let her handle the riding mower. I do the weedeating and a little push mowing to finish up the yard. We mow 3 acres.
  7. I've spent too much period. Buying stuff since the early 1980s. It's all good.
  8. You may do best by eliminating most of those things. Pair it down to a handful of baits that work well on your lake depending on the season.

I've always worn baseball caps of different styles for fishing. They shield much of your face, but leave ears and neck fully exposed. I picked up two military surplus boonie hats over the weekend. When you pull these hats down, they fully cover your ears, and shade your face much more than a standard ball cap. This hat, combined with a neck gator, and sun screen, should work out well for sun protection. It will be hot before we know it. Take precautions against sun exposure. You'll be glad you did.
  10. I've done best on them as a standard t rig, or a shakey head jig. I use Owner shakey heads with a 4/0 hook.
  11. Actually, my morning stretching routine is pretty good. It takes me about 20 min. Then sit ups and leg lifts to finish off. At 64, my doctor says I'm in good shape. Not overweight, non smoker, and try to eat well. What's happened to me is what happens to lots of guys who do trade work for so long. Too many years of lifting, stretching, up and down ladders, and crawling around on your knees. A slight amount of carpal tunnel from gripping tools so much also. I appreciate the encouragement. I plan on enjoying my retirement, and I'm too bull headed to give in to these aches and pains easily. When I was working, I got my exercise at work. Now, I'll carry on at home. The worst thing you can do is remain idle.
  12. Agree on Magellan outdoors. I just get the standard summer UV fishing shirt. They're made a little big so are loose and comfortable, with plenty of pockets.
  13. Sounds like you had a rough day, and got to test your treble hooks. Better luck next time, and be careful out there.
  14. I do like a light chop on the surface. Very light chop.
  15. Enjoy your retirement.Once you get used to it, it's really nice.

I'm surprised that no Berkeley products got mentioned also? I'm not surprised with grn Senkos. Seems to be the big choice here

Here's a question for BR members. If you were limited to fishing only one type of plastic worm for the entire season, which would it be? Choose any color you like, but only one brand and style. What would be your top choice?

  20. I retired as a carpenter not long ago. I probably should have gotten away from this work years ago, but I didn't. I stuck it out untill the end. Because of the physical demands of this work, I have aches and pains which affect my fishing. I start the day with some stretching exercises. I wrap my rod handles with rod tape, to help with pain when I grip things. I also coat my knees with a deep heat rub. And last, I can't fish as long as I would like to. Sitting in a boat chair bothers my back after some time, then I'm standing up and sitting again, trying to get comfortable. Now at 64 I can fish around three hours, then I'll need to go home. We can never expect our bodies to stay young our entire lives. Old age happens. Are there others here who have aches and pains which affect your fishing?
  21. I've had great luck with basic Stren 6 or 8lb for spin fishing for at least 20 yrs. Casting rods using Big Game. I used to use Trilene for spinning rigs, but like Stren better.
  22. I've flexed them back and forth, and used a razor knife to trim them a little. I trim them from the bottom for thickness. Not too much for length. Always trying to find the right balance.
  23. 6" Mann's Jelly Worm. Black
  24. My grandson and his friend found a good size bucket of morels yesterday after school. They're going again today. All the morels they found were under cottonwood trees. They've also found some under elm trees that have shed the bark. I've seen morels listed in a local paper for 50 dollars a pound bag. Depending on moisture in the soil, and how much rain we've gotten, some years can be very good for mushroom hunters. We usually slice them in half, and soak them in a bowl of water that been heavily salted. Then rinse them off, batter and fry. They taste delicious with some crappie or bluegill fillets. Is anyone else going mushroom hunting this spring?
  25. Here in Missouri, deep fried fish are an old favourite. Fillet them, batter with a mix of egg and milk. Then coat them with flour or cornmeal. We've had them like this since I was young. Some of the batter mixes you can buy are good also.
