Items you'd least want to fish without ?

Featured Replies

The reason I ask is, a buddy of mine are constantly jumping back and forth from his boat to mine and items are being left behind in the process. We're working on it though. Lol

Recently forgot my polarized sunglasses and quickly realized how reliant I am with them, I was miserable.

Another item, fish grippers !!!!

I was throwing jerkbaits and had to net even the little Bass in fear of burying a hook.

What are some other items that if forgotten could sour the day ?

Used these once: Never again, my missile shooter was on fire for 2 days!

  • That stays in the boat & truck!

Other than your normal gear stuff, I'd turn around if I forgot my sunglasses or depending on the lake, my stakeout pole.

I never bring a net but I’m useless without sunglasses

and they are a critical safety item as important as a PFD in my opinion.  I might be able to swim out of a potential fall into the drink but there is a higher chance of a hook in the eye causing ireparable damage

Agree…Sunglasses are a must especially down here, along with a hat and water.

I’ve gone back to the ramp more than once to get one or the other

However in the interest of my own sanity and the sanity of some of the other long time forum members, I am going with

a SCALE !

Hat is #1, sunblock is #2. Bald, and had one skin cancer removed from my head already...another spot getting biopsy as we speak.

Eye-protection / sunglasses #3 for sure.

Mine is Aleve, or Tylenol, or something to help my back out after standing for 5 hours straight.

I Hope it’s benign!

Boat, sun protection, sunglasses, a rod/reel/line and a frog.  The rest is also superfluous.

...but I do like to go overboard.

You forget safety & you will get Gibbs's slapped!

I gotta have a anchor/throwdown pole & 25-30' of rope!

Rod and reel…

…and sunglasses.

On occasion I do fish in someone else's boat but most of the time I'm in my own boat.  I have a specific soft sided tackle bag that I put items in for when I go in someone else's rig.  Pliers, shades, scissors, and sun block are always in it.

I'm going to assume that when I enter someone else's rig, they already have certain safety requirements like a PFD.  I should not have to bring that with me.  I expect them to also have a first aid kit, measuring board, an anchor, a net, and a fire extinguisher.  I shouldn't have to haul around a freaking anchor or a rope.  That's just down right ridiculous.  If they don't have basic safety items in their rig, there's a good chance I wouldn't be going with them anyways.

The primary issue I run into is deciding which tackle/lures to take with me.  I can't bring my entire arsenal from my own boat.  Not practical.  So I have to kind of pick and choose what I think I might be using.  Either that or just bring a little of everything but even that can get out of hand quickly.

In the canoe - PFD, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, calendula essential oil (works like bug-spray, but natural), anchor, pliers, snips, paddle, med-kit, emergency throw cushion, air-horn - at minimum

For the F-9 - all that and add small tool kit and fire extinguisher

Water, hook sharpener, sunglasses, hat, pliers, scale, extra line.

All are kind of essential for me. There’s a lot of pre-checks before a fishing trip. Nowdays when I go I’ve usually got everything, no problems.

I seriously can’t fish without sunglasses. Unless it is overcast then I can manage.

Hemostat pliers are another item I absolutely need with me. And scissors which can deal with braided line makes life a lot easier.

Strong pair of kitchen scissors is the best thing I’ve found for braid. I also use wire cutters which are extremely useful in other ways too

My boat goes thru a coast guard approved safety check -  http://cgaux.org/vsc/ - prior to going in the water:

PDF's (coast guard approved and 1 throwable) , air horn, lights (nav & handheld), flares, fire extinguisher, small tools, documentation, anchor, extra rope

Then the carry-ons are sunscreen, fishing equip, water, an extra 5 gals of gas, hat and sunglasses.

That's an aside - I never go anywhere without my cigs...

I buy dollar store 3$ braid shears but they inevitably get too dull after a full season. Just laziness on my part cause if I probably look around I can find some better ones. There seems to be a lot of options out there
