A-Jay's 4th Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~
Gotta finish the F-9 first...unless I take a day here and there to do shore fishing.

Eating trash fish...
Correct on the first, incorrect on the second - 2022 regs. So there is a possession limit... I actually do keep bullhead - been eating them since I was a kid in MA...they're pretty decent...not up to crappie or walleye, but edible.

A-Jay's 4th Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~
Well the La Nina they'd predicted never bore fruit - so ya...my prediction was late based on the original climate prediction.

A-Jay's 4th Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~
Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) - Minnesota/Canada border. I can believe it - as I've said before, one year season opener (middle of May), we still still had ice floating in Lake Bemidji...which is only 80 miles south of the BWCA

Is 8:00 too late?
Nope - just a dozen states recognize GF - it's not a Federal Holiday, just a State Holiday in those 12.

Is 8:00 too late?
Doesn't quite work out that way....Christmas is a national holiday after all.

Jig Trailer Length? When and Where…
I use the 4" Pit Boss on both 3/8 and 1/2 - would probably work as well on the 5/8 5" Pit Boss on my 3/4 - probably be fine for the 1oz as well...could also use on the 5/8 to slow the fall on that one and 'bulk it up' a bit.

FedEX gives me heartburn.
This is generally my experience with FedEx Two items ordered last Friday from two different places...both shipped FedEx 35ah 'house battery' for the F-9 - scheduled delivery 14th-18th - delivered today at 1:30pm...box was a little damp from the rain we got...otherwise not a dent or hole anywhere MinnKota Edge 45#/45" - estimated 3-8 business days (today was day 4) - delivered today at 6:30pm...box a little damp (again), but otherwise pristine.

Joining the 'real' boat crowd
Nope - Marine Grade is the highest level for this type of work. Next down is ACX which is both-sides sanded, then BCX which is one-side sanded. While they all need to be sealed, Marine Grade is naturally more water resistant due to the different glue used. Being on a tight budget - went with BCX and Spar Urethane 4'x8' sheet of 1/2" Marine Grade - $99 ACX - $72 BCX - $50 Needing three sheets for this project - the 'savings' add up quick.

Is 8:00 too late?
I'd go - time of day really has nothing to do with it. Fish in my profile pic? Caught around 11:30am on a mostly clear day with bright sunshine on a spinnerbait in about 3' of water. GO FISH!

Final spincast question
Back-reel not so much...I like trusting the drag to handle my fish. Ergonomics isn't it either - you basically handle it similar to how you handle a baitcaster My problem with spincasters is operative. I've seen even decent spincasts 'lock up' - the pickup rotor not returning back to the retrieve position. Then you gotta take it apart to fix it while your line/lure is out.
-
Final spincast question
Nope - I upgraded from spincast to spinning back in 1967...never going back.
