2024 fishing license
michigan resident all species ( we used to have 2 licenses one for trout and salmon and 1 for inland non trout water) 17 yrs and older is $26. It is good untill march 31st of the following year. I believe I can purchase a 2024 license beginning February or March of 2024? but, 2023’s fishing license expires on march 31st 2024. I usually don’t buy mine untill the end of march.

Tackle buying for 2024
I have a lot stuff i need to get rid of. Most of it will probably go to the trash and i’ll give some to my nephew. I try to stick to a 2 year rule. If i havnt used it or caught a fish on that lure. i’m getting rid of it. Seems the used market is pretty much flooded with tackle, boats, rods and reels. between shipping cost, ebay costs, pay pal, etc, etc. it just seems like isn’t worth the time effort to try and sell it and get what pennie’s on the dollar i could get. By the time you factor in all the above costs for most used items a person might as well by new. Honestly other than deep diving jerk baits i’ll stock up on the plastic i need and call it good this year. not this fall but, the next i want to upgrade my boat to a bass boat.

Lures You Used More this Year
lipless cranks both jigging the 3/4 oz lucky craft LVO and cranking 1/2 oz rat L traps and 6th sense crush. Went back to fishing the ned rig. mainly on the smallest 1/10 size. on windy days i’d upsize to 1/6 size and crushed some smallies and large mouth on it mid summer. Before, i was only throwing it in the spring for whatever reason. Also, threw spooks this year quite a bit and had some success walking the dog in top. Buying that No.7 color from lure net got me started down that road.

KVD Speed bags discontinued
yeah i totally see that. maybe i’ll use the boxes for smy spine craws and bandito bugs and other craws.

KVD Speed bags discontinued
so i’m thinking of going this way for my craws and or creature baits. last couple of years ive just been noticing a lot distorted craws and other body parts. my only question is for the berkley power bait and maxx scent stuff. the scents infused into the plastic ? if i put them in the plano type boxes the scent shouldn’t evaporate will it ?

Lures You Used Less this Year
chatter bait, all types of cranks, and spinner bait. not throwing the chatter bait and spinner bait was a mistake on my end. I usually pound fish with both in the spring. However, i was too busy messing around with other stuff. The cranks though just didn’t produce for some reason. we had a very mild winter last year which, i think promoted more weed growth than usual. The summer was also very mild. a lot of the water i fished never got above 75-78 degrees. So i think the fish never really went deep until late august. which, i was basically done fishing last year at that time. i threw plastics from early may untill october. i’ve had years where i don’t get into the soft plastics untill june some years.

KVD Speed bags discontinued
i was wondering about the speed bags being discontinued. i picked up like 4 of big worm bags late last year for $5 a piece at the local surplus store. The local surplus store sells outdoors equipment but, unless it’s walleye tackle. they usually buy last years tackle from the big stores or wholesale at a heavy discount. i really liked the speed bags

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
here is a major score from my favorite ebay vendor from alabama. 4 lucky craft LVO’s 3/4 oz ( 2 gold & 2 striped gill). bottom 3 right side 3 magic-man 75 3/4oz in louisiana frog cakes. and 3 magic man 65’s 1/2 oz in chicken of the sea. got it all for $70 shipped. that translucent gill color should be killer early spring with a lot of the clear lakes that i fish. I always like throwing gold on cloudy days First impressions of the 13 magic man lipless cranks is very favorable. these are well well made. I like the color line up that 13 has. havnt fished them yet though. i think im set on 3/4 oz lipless baits but, i could buy more of those 1/2 oz. I could see me buying a few more 1/2 oz rattle traps as well. lousiana frog color could be a bunch of different bait fish up here. chicken of the sea, i don’t like super bright chartreuse baits. i like the chartreuse to be more subdued. best time to throw chartreuse is the last hour-half before the sun goes down.

so i’m keeping things very basic this year. only real things on my shopping list are lipless cranks and deeper +1 and +2 jerk baits. i’ve got twins on the way so i don’t really know how much fishing i’ll be doing past june. plan building one bass spining rod and walleye vertical jigging rod which, i already have reels for. these all came from walmart In St.johns. that OG6 is a replacement for one i lost on the titabawassee last year. bottom to top googan lipless 1/2 oz rat l trap 1/2 oz shad rap rs-7 in perch shallow shad rap -7 in perch og-6 in silver black back. i’ve got some lucky craft 3/4 lvo’s on thier way which i win on ebay. i used to catch a lot of fish using jerk baits as cranks baits. when I am small stream trout and smallie fishing that is how i still fish the smaller rapala’s like f5-7 and the j-7 jointed rapala’s.

Does anyone use a Flogger?
i’ve seen pictures of floggers used a lot on lake St.clair when people are bed fishing for smallies. I believe they are primarily used for bed fishing. I try very hard to not bed fish so i don’t have a use for one but, to each their own

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
usually, 1/4-3/8 jigs are used on the saginaw and 3/4- 1 1/2 on detroit. i would be fishing the saginaw the most by that i mean 3-4 times a year. i’m not a huge walleye fisherman. other than putting some meat in the freezer and to ward off the winter bottom. i’ve only fished the detroit once ever and that was last year with my brothers guide friend. we will be using doing it again this year. that would be probably be the not trip i take down there as when the walleye really start heating april-may) i’m more focused on bass season in late march, april, may. id probably build the saginaw river rod first br, that’s after i get this current bass rod built. which, i’ll order everything for after the 1st of the year when my account resets with lureparts. im thinking of using a vss size 17 reel seat what’s the difference between the fuji vss and the fuji ipssd reel seats? obviously the vss takes a pre made cork handle and the ippsd looks like it can take a regular handle ? what are differences between the 2 ? id probably

i think shorter rods for walleye jigging would be handier. would there be an issue if cut 4-6 inches off the butt of those ?

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
here is a video of what i was talking about However, as you stated in the email i could just glue both pieces together and than stick them on the mandrel. put the mandrel in the drill press. i would just have to glue a piece of cork, eva, or rubber in place of the hole and than sand it smooth.

Pflueger President.
when they first came out hey were a great reel. in the year 2023 almost 2024 there are much better options either at the same price or $10 more. seems who ever owns phlueger either changed out the parts or the mfg process on the reels somewhere around 2015-2016. Before that time frame they were a well made reel. I’ve watched 10lbs-15lbs river run king salmon just destroy the internals on presidents. where other brands at the same price point keep on ticking This time last year i could have pointed you to a forum where over 20 of the reels that had part #23 broken which, is the bail arm guide. this part was breaking so often that ereplacementparts * ( which, is the company who handles phluegar replacement parts in the USA) ran out of the replacement part and had a 6-8 month back order on the part. I know first hand because, i had one of the 20 reels that the part broke. I have 1 size 20 president and a size 30 president which, have been nothing but problems. as soon as i get the time to fix the size 30 it’s gong down the road. this is also not counting the phlueger supreme bait caster that the frame completely fell apart on me one day while fishing cranks.

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
i was in sports man ware house today. i made it a point to look at the rods in the fishing section. particularly looking at ty guides wraps on the rods. i looked at a couple of $180-$190 lews and abu garcia spring combos and yikes they are making the same screw ups that i am. i feel a little better about my abilities now haha the st.croix, Gloomis, ducket, and other higher end rods looked fine at least technically. but, most of the wraps are nothing special

i would like to build a dedicated jigging rod for walleye too. it would be nice to have a dedicated rod walleye rod for this time of year. i only live 20 minutes from the saginaw river and like a hour from the detroit river. other than some trolling rods i don’t have dedicated trolling rods.

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
well with this info i think im leaning with the mhx sj842 or sj843 i do have one rx6 blank but its a mh 3/8-1 oz casting rod. it is a fast action but, is definitely a bit slower in the tip as compared to other mh fast rods. it is very hard to figure out an action on blanks or any rod components with out putting your hands on them.

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
thanks for the kind words however, i think i’ve been worried about colors of he thread and coloring of eva handles rather than focusing on flawless rod. there’s just a lot mistakes in my previous builds. its stupid stuff like seeing the blank through the wraps, to much epoxy on running guide, fitment of the differnt cork or eva pieces. i finally figured out how to shape a fighting butt to the main grip( this stressesed me out for a long time). glue the butt to the grip, take a bushing of either wood or plastic. put tape around bushing to fit the ID of the grip, stick it into grip and than other end into the hand held drill. i’ll probably have to use a zip tie to control drill speed. with knowing this now i can make joint look good between the rear grip and butt. I even though my rod geek c473mhxs was a $100 rod. i don’t think i am good enough to be building in $100 rd blanks yet. seems like i always buy the wrong size guides, that gets annoying. i do have a drill press and crb arbors that i used to build my last 2 grips. what was throwing me for a loop was figuring out how to shape somthing that didn’t have a hole all the way threw it like a cork or eva butt piece to the grip.

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
thanks. i was leaning more towards the kit. it comes with split grip eva grips. i may switch the grips out for a cork split grip. id probably be using braid. the little bit softer tip wouldn’t hurt anything would it ?

rx6 sp843 vs mhx sj843
looking for opinion between the rx6 sp843 and the mhx sj843. both rods are 7ft medium rods. the rx 6 is Line Weight: 8-14lb. Lure Weight: 1/4-5/8oz. the mhx sj843 8-15 lbs medium 7ft about all the info that lure net has about the blank i’m looking to use the rod for general purpose spinning stuff. first and foremost i would use it for wacky rigging and dragging a 1/4 oz tube jig. secondary things would fishing deep for smallies with like 1/4-1/2 oz ball jig with craw or yamamoto hula grub. i have a 7ft st.croix m/l triumph for the smaller ned rigs. really i envision this rod for fishing deep smallies and wacky rigging. i havnt been happy with the way my full sized rods have came out. my ice rods look phenomenal for some reason. so im really just trying to keep it basic and and on the lower end of the money scale. I have a whole sale account through lure parts.com for my jig business so I can get the rx6 in a complete kit for $54 dollars. the mhx blank will cost just over $54 plus the rest of the components which, would be well under $100. i could possibly look at the sc2 blanks for rd geeks.

Understanding pricing of blanks
not to be off topic but, what would a st.croix premier rod be from rod geeks? a sc2 series blank?

Productive Baits 2023 ~
here is my list of productive baits 2023. first photo is from early in the year untill about the spawn. 2nd photo is basically from the spawn untill october. not pictured in the first photo would be a silver and blue back kvd deep 300. i had 2 to start the year. I don’t remember loosing 2nd one. it has/was historicly been a pretty big producer for me. seems like if i had lost the 2nd one to fish or snag i would have bought a replacement ( it’s actually giving me anxiety not knowing where it’s at) . so i will be buying 2 again. i seemed to have misplaced my ned rig box ( also giving me anxiety) but, copertreuse ned should be in the 2nd picture along, with berkley maxx scent green pumpkin party general. I kid you not i caught probably 30 fish on that pack including 2 3.5 lbers in one day. all wacky rigged photo apparently got switched around 2nd photo 6th sense lipless, lucky craft Lvo 500 3/4 oz lipless, lucky craft 100 sp, kvd deep 300 clear ayu, and 300 deep ayu 1st photo little john md silver olive back. this has been a very. productive little crank particularly when the water is 55-65 degrees. a 6 inch yum dinger in watermelon pearl laminate which, is a very good late may-june t-rigged bait. black and blue spine craw, green pink moon blue flake. spine craw GB hayes which, killed smallies in really clear water. watermelon red craw fatty and a zoom GP tube. interesting notes. usually, i do very well on chatter baits early in the year but, not so much this last year. i usually catch multiple big fish on cranks all year long but, i didn’t do much of anything on cranks. most of the summer i threw those spine craws t-rigged. I didn’t really throw any jigs either. if the spine craws produce again this year i’ll be able to throw out a lot of use less craws and other creature baits. i also rediscovered the ned rig after not touching it for 3-4 years.
