IMPO a reel that new doesn't need supertuning. Most of to-days reels that are having casting problems and don't feel good at all, are problems derived from not having the reel/s service and maintained (PM = preventive maintenance) as they were out of the box from the beginning. There are a few articles around about supertuning this is just one that was in field and stream.. Super-Tuning Baitcasters...Some finer points on the need for speed. Just my .02¢ from the bench... If the rod isn't rated for 1/8oz lures then don't try and cast them on it, just keeps getting more frustrating.. Might try some reading about system balance (and I don't mean the rod)... Basic Baitcast Reel Setup 101 Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!!

You could upgrade to carbontex, but you right now have 10lb max drags.

Could be a loop in the line stack on the spool, could be a spool support bearing that is getting dry, could just be the spool. Hard to say without seeing and hearing it happen... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

fisherdave, If you have never opened up a reel to service then don't..Find a qualified service center and have them do it. I have serviced the MegaForce, but not the Code we don't service Quantum anymore...... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

Back off the drags for prolonged storage, (winter or longer). More than that is personal preference. Just my .02¢ from the bench... Tight Lines!!!

SimonSays, Yup that's what I thought. I would cover the backing with a single layer of electricians tape. This allows the braided line to bite into a non slick surface, then I bet the line will no slip at all. The best way to test for braided line slipping on the spool, is spool up your braided line the way you normally do. Then remove the spool from the reels frame, hold both ends of the spool and pull the line, if you can pull line off it's slipping and has nothing to do with the drags in the reel. SimonSays, What you are describing sounds like a spool loaded with braided line and no backing. With the drags locked down (as you put it), you should have plenty of drag for most any freshwater fish you will run across. Remember this "there are no direct drive reels anymore" , all of the freshwater reels manufactured today are setup to release at a certain amount of drag pressure to help keep the one way bearings from blowing out, and in Shimano' own way that's why they have been using the Stopper Assist. One silly question...... :-?Why didn't you just return it then, instead of opening it up and making things worse? :

Like I always state even with the reels schematic... "If you have never then don't take it apart" Sounds like you stacked the pinion yoke upside down, and it isn't allowing the pinion gear to engage the engagement pin on the spool shaft. Really doesn't matter now since you took it back, bet you didn't tell them your in training to be a service tech and took it apart, so the next guy doesn't get your mistakes. The line rating on your reel is just what the mfg places to let you know what the reel will hold at a givien line size & capacity. As you go up higher on the line size you use, you will also lose some capacity. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

You could probably upgrade your spool support bearings to ABEC5's either in Stainless or Ceramic's. As for upgrading the drags I don't see anything that is made just for the Cardiff, but when measured you would be surprised what you might find that fits in the Carbontex line... As for your Curado' 200 there are Carbontex for the 200 dhsv (I have in stock) and the dpv (I need to order). The spool support bearings you can get ABEC5's in Stainless or Ceramics.. 'm betting his reel guy is greasing the worm gear and it is gumming up with dirt. I have seen Abu' that this has been done to and in a 6 month period if the reel is fished hard, it will cause the pawl to wear in a half moon shape you can see. As far as the catching it is usually crud build up in the (cuts) of the worm gear and the pawl is trying to ride up and out, to cut it's own path. If the reel is doing this a tooth brush taken and cleaning the worm gear out should take care of the issue. If you notice any new paths being cut on the worm gear then replace the worm gear immediately. Just my .02¢ Tight Lines!!!!!

Not quite.... The first Lew's Speed Spools BB1, BB1n were tooled by Shimano®. Then the licensing for the Lew' reels changed...I was servicing them in the late 80's Tight Lines!!!!!

All the time through the 80's and 90's that I followed Hank Parkers career, he was sponsored buy Abu Garcia®, Berkley®, and Mann's® Ryobi® was trying to make a run in the fishing industry in the early 90's. Mostly with the small style V-spool reels much like Shimano's Bantam (japanese for small) reels. They Ryobi thought they really had something with a BC that you could change crank sides on. They didn't..... Tight Lines!!!
