Thoughts on Fishing when you are old and tired...
Moderation is starting to slow and increase as you warm up. Remember you are not 22 anymore! I start by laying on my back with arm spread out and knees bent. With Knesset bent I rotate the knees to one side then the other about 10 cycles. I have a strap with loops on each end that I put one foot into like a stirrup and straighten to leg and slowly pull it up and do a 10 leg bends and straighten against the strap. Repeat the other leg. Next I bend the leg at the knee to make a figure 4 and slowly pull my foot a few inches and repeat with the other leg. Stretching is done. Now walk for an hour. Tom

Get your dad to walk and go with him for company and reason to get out. Start a short walk and increase it slowly until you get 20 to 30 minutes. Walking helps more than you think. Tom

Jerkbait +2 success opinions....
Bass don’t need to eat often in cold water because their metabolism has slowed way down. You are trying to get a reaction bite from bass that could care less about eating. Storm Suspend Dots or Strips to get the jerk bait to sink to whatever depth you desire. Tom

Thoughts on Fishing when you are old and tired...
At 65 weight lifting doesn’t tear ligaments at 80 it’s another story. You can lift weights if you take the 20+ minutes to stretch 1st. At 65 my spine was in 1 piece and could easily lift my own weight. Now 82+ I am happy to tie my own shoes…time takes a toll but better than the alternative. Tom

Thoughts on Fishing when you are old and tired...
The key to staying balanced is morning stretching exercise not weight lifting other than staying toned. I was a gymnast and very agile until spine surgery, now clumsy can’t feel my feet! Good luck and be safe. Tom

Your BFS experience
Slack line drag on the water doesn’t change using BSF or Spinning. Verticle fall requires slack line, create that you’re get vertical lure fall. Tom

Wintertime Deadsticking Locations
Cold water period your sonar is your friend use it! I sonar survey more than fishing to find bait and bass. The only time I dead stick is picking out a backlash. Jigs are my most productive lure followed by structure spoons in cold water. Hand poured soft plastics is all I use in cold water they are softer and more buoyant. Neko rig * ( nail weight) and Slip shot rig ( finesse C-rig) slowly dragged where you meter fish usually pays off. When located the Neko rig or drop shot about 6” hook to weight. I fish hair jigs with pork trailers the same year around with same technique; Horizontal Jigging. The earth has a hot core keeping the ground is warmer than the cold water. spring water is always between 50-60 degrees year around. Threadfin Shad die off when water drops below 50 degrees. Tom * shake it!

Hi
Suggest you take a breather from trying to buy tackle to solve your bass catching issue. Too much info too fast creates overload that overwhelms the learning process. LMB are predominate where you are located so let’s focus on LMB. Bass (LMB) have a few predictable behavior traits that govern their behavior. The Bass calendar is dependent on water temperature that affects their location and feeding habits. The basic seasonal periods are winter (cold water period), Pre Spawn the transition from cold water to warming water and the Spawn cycle. Bass are active feeding during the Pre Spawn period and slow way down during the cold water period that you are in now. Bass don’t eat prey during the spawn period, they are focused on pro creation laying eggs and protection the bed site from egg eaters. This occurs as the water temps warm to the low to mid 60’s. Not all bass spawn at the same time, it’s occurs in waves over weeks. The Summer period (warm water) the bass scatter from the spawning areas and now have a wide variety of prey to feed on. The Fall period follows Summer as the water cools and the start to group and feed actively on baitfish that are adjusting to colder winter water coming. Winter the go deeper to stay warm and are less active. Pre Spawn the come into shallower water to feed before the spawn. Spawn the bass seek out wind protected areas in shallower water between 8’ to 2’ deep. Summer the bass scatter and can be anywhere a good prey source is located. Fall the bass follow schools of bait fish. Winter the bass go deeper and slow way down. Lures you ave are good for active feeding bass. Lures you need are soft plastics and jigs that move slowly at the depth the are located. That it in a nutshell. Location and depth are the key to catching bass. It’s a puzzle we all try to solve. Tom

Hi
Welcome to BR we have lots of members from Texas who may know your lake well. Can you share what lure or bait and rod and reel you use, it will be helpful. Tom

Your BFS experience
You can if you put a higher arc in the cast to create slack line when the lure hits the water. If it’s windy the higher arc gets negated. 1/8 oz is nominal for BSF light rods and normally can cast well over 30 yards. The Falcon Cara BSF rod is a ML rod, still can cast 1/8 over 30 yards but has more back bone then light power rods like Dobyns and Classic Phenix BSF rods. For those who use braid to leader the Shimano Zodias BSF rods offer larger guide trains. Tom

Anything else y’all would add?

Moving bait color question
Dark and light color contrast works. Tom

Moving bait color question
Lure mfr’s have your lake figured out too. The color black-blue is offered in a wide variety of lures types including crank baits, spinnerbaits, chatter baits, etc. Bluegill colors are also offered in every lure type….choices! Tom

Brent ehler med/mh braid to leader question
Reel and firm rod sweep works! Tom

Your BFS experience
Experience has been very positive👍 Advantage casting light lures normally considered for spinning tackle more accurately. Eliminates line twist without going to braid and leader. Improved strike detection. Average size bass can put up good fight on light rods used with BFS. Small Stripe bass between 4 lbs to 7 lbs are very strong fighters on BFS tackle. Tom

What are your thoughts on the Fluxjet Kayak?
Looking at the promotional videos the boat isn’t stable standing, too narrow the guy is doing his best but very wobbly. The concept is good and second or third generation probably improve the kayak or it’s gone! Tom PS, recreational the kayak needs to offer a 2 seater.

Thinking of giving up on baitcasters
Spinning rod/reels became popular for finesse bass fishing in the 80’s out west. When you used a spinning rods it was called a fairy wand or sissy stick, times have changed. Gary Yamamoto never used a casting reel, he used spinning a pioneer in bass fishing. I used spinning during the 80’s up to last year, still have 1 for senko’s, now a BFS fan. Each to his or her own, enjoy the sport. Tom

The forbidden lake…
The owner is probably concerned if she give an inch you take a mile. Suggest wearing you church cloths and assure her that permission is for you alone and catch & release all the bass you catch. Tom

Thinking of giving up on baitcasters
Get rid of the Vanish line it’s junk! Most of us learned that lesion years ago. Casting Fluorocarbon line you need a line lubricant, I use Tangle Free that I can use during the+outing most use KVD that is sprayed on the night before fishing. Stay away from Reel Magic, tends to Gum up reel Lubricants. FC line doesn’t stay wet and tends to spring off the reel spool during the cast. Lure weight for bait casting shouldn’t be less then the nominal rods weight suggest. If you go with super light weight reel spools you can go down to minimum lure weights for the rod. Bottom line is use what you like! Tom

NEW VIDEO!! Cold Water Jig Fishing Simplified: Tips for Big Bites
Another excellent jig video👍 Take note that Glenn is keeping the rod tip down and feeling the line, both critical when keeping in touch to detect strikes with deep casting jigs. Tom
