Super User DogBone_384 Posted June 13, 2024 Super User Posted June 13, 2024 I fished Ames Nowell in Abington for the first time yesterday. Got one bass on a purple/green Bandito Bug. Water temps were 79.x. The employee at the gate said the State is treating the water to eliminate vegetation. The water was coffee brown and the little vegetation was brown/dead, except for lily pads near the islands. It's posted on the pole next to the path to the pond that for 60 days, starting 5/26/24, there is no swimming, fishing, boating, camping..... There were two others fishing from shore while I was there. Braintree did the same to Sunset Lake and Canton to Canton res. a few years ago. I've not caught anything of any size at either since. A second employee at Ames Nowell said he's talked to other fishermen since the water treatment and they told him there hasn't been a difference in fishing. Take it for what it's worth. 1 Quote
Don51 Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 There has to be big fish in Ames Nowell. Heavy vegetation has been an issue there for years. Took the yak out a couple of times and didn't do all that well. I have caught a couple in the 5-6 lb range fishing from shore. Tough place. Were you able to drive down to the water or did you have to wheel the yak down? Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted June 18, 2024 Super User Posted June 18, 2024 Made a post-fathers day trip to worcester yesterday for some fishing with my dad. The wind and pre-heat wave shift in the weather seemed to get them fired up. It started slow but I managed a few decent 2 to 3lbers in the pads doing some light punching/flipping. The wind picked up and we headed a bit deeper and really found them. I could not put down the spinnerbait they were all over it but it was a weird bite, my dad only got 6 bass to my 26 😭 despite having the dame spinnerbait tied on. It seemed like a weird combo of going slow while also triggering a reaction bite was the key but they seemed to just like me more I guess haha. Also managed a 25 inch pickerel that hit like a freight train and I thought might have been a pike at first. Fish seemed in a typical post-spawn pattern but we couldn't find the big ones. I did dump a 3lber on a dropshot because I tried lifting it on 6lb line 🤦♂️. 3 Quote

Yup I submitted it, I usually run into a few pin quality pickerel each summer targeting those deeper weedlines for bass. 6 Quote

Sputterbug Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 5lb.15oz. Got him on a worm. I hadn't fished this pond(small bog) in a few years, don't think it gets much pressure. Got a few others on a spinnerbait earlier but went with a worm dropped in tight near the shore. 4 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted July 2, 2024 Super User Posted July 2, 2024 Got out for the first time in two weeks ... 😑 ... to my home pond. Did pretty good. 5 LMB, three around 1 3/4 - 2 pounds and two dinks. A plum Zoom Ole Monster, 5" junebug Senko, and watermelon/red flake Bandito Bug did the trick. Water temps were 79.x - 80.x. I'm fishing with ReelNorthernBass in NH on Sunday, hoping to pick up some deep water tips. They're from NH and have a pretty good YT channel that streams live on Wednesday nights. 3 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted July 2, 2024 Super User Posted July 2, 2024 I had some time this afternoon so I dropped into Wampatuck Pond, behind Hanson town hall, for the first time. Spent a couple hours there. It's 3' +/- deep, coffee w/milk colored, and the only vegetation were lili pads around the perimeter. The only signs of life were a turtle and blue heron. It reminded me a lot of Ames Nowell state park. Water temps were 82.x. I'm glad I brought my kayak and not Ranger. 1 Quote
Don51 Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 That pond has some of the worst algae I have ever seen. the water will actually burn your skin and cause eye irritation. Nasty place! I have a sweatshirt that has bleach stains on it from getting splashed with that water. They used to post warnings at the launch. 🤔 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 3, 2024 Super User Posted July 3, 2024 I need to get out again soon it's been a while. I got some new spinnerbaits and punching baits in the mail I want to try. 2 Quote
guidoStow Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 I caught a half dozen small smallmouth in a northern NH river last week. I'll be back up again after the 4th craziness subsides... 2 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted July 8, 2024 Super User Posted July 8, 2024 My trip with ReelNorthernBass is postponed, but boss lady signed my permission slip yesterday afternoon so I drove to Plymouth and fished a couple of my favorite ponds. 11 fish made it to the kayak and two didn't. Six white perch, four SMB, and one LMB. Most fish were between 1 1/2 & 1 3/4 pounds, including two perch. Larry was the big fish at 2.79. I threw a jig, chatterbait, whopper plopper, T-rigged Swim Senko, 4.3" Keitech, and all I needed was a perch Vision 110+1. The SMB fought hard, with a couple coming a foot out of the water. The perch did pretty good and the LMB, the biggest of the day, felt like a bag of potatoes I pulled off its Lazy Boy chair. Water temps were in the low 80's. I'll drive to Plymouth during the week, but won't hit the Cape until September. 1 Quote

One of my favorite ponds… almost always a good frog bite, a lot of overhanging bushes and trees to skip under… and there’s a 5 foot deep channel to the left of the island if your standing at the ramp. If you ever try to hit it again let me know, and we can hookup.. did you see the laydown in the third cove to the left? 4 Quote

I lost interest after an hour and a half. I do poorly at every pond I've fished with that kind of water. I'll give it that it was July 1st in the middle of the day, but even a wacky Senko wasn't working. Quote
bass.slayer69 Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Been absent from this forum for a while but figured I’d pop back on to share some news. Been fishing decently over the past year or so but stuck my new pb today at a random pond in Plymouth. 6.67 #. Wacky rigged green pumpkin senko in deep ish water. Crushed my old pb of 3.7. Hoping for state pin even tho I don’t have exact length. Would like to everyone for the tips and updates over the years that have gotten me to this moment! 5 Quote

I have been in FL the past 8 years. I will take south shore fishing hands down. The only downfall is the season is too short. I get to fish year round now. Quote

Mr. Aquarium Posted July 16, 2024 Posted July 16, 2024 I have nothing to report but the continuous skunk. Lot of casting practice. I haven’t caught a decent fish since May. Been doing saltwater and I’m catching a whole lotta nothing. Bait like pogies and mackerel and the occasional small trash fish that’s about all I’m catching. The pogies are going without a sniff! I think I need to go back to bass Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 16, 2024 Super User Posted July 16, 2024 I have not been doing much fishing, probably will get back to it a bi in August, hopefully the heat dies down a bit by then. Quote

I waited until 1600 to get to the water today, staying local. Managed one LMB @ 1.59 pounds on an orange/brown Senko. I threw a jig, 3.8" Keitech, jerkbait, squarebill, and chatterbait. Something hit the jig pretty hard but let go. I think it was a pickerel. Otherwise it was just casting practice. Water temps were 85.x - 87.x, winds were 13-ish from the SW and air pressure was 29.7 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 18, 2024 Super User Posted July 18, 2024 87 water temp??!! That's insane. I went swimming last weekend and it was almost kind of gross how warm the water was. Not refreshing. Quote
Bob011278 Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 Water has fluxed from 83-87 on my pond depending on the day and rain. I've been out with my 4yr old son most days so it allot of teaching moments but we have caught fish every time out on a variety of baits - swimbaits, jigs, topwater, worms etc. He has been having a blast and is addicted to fishing now. Most of the bigger fish have come on 1/2 football jig and craw trailer fished in 8-10ft where the outer weed line edges are. The amount of dragon flies is unreal some days and bass have been skying trying to eat them, and that's when topwater has worked well. Not sure why the pic is sideways. 4 Quote
Sputterbug Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 A few nights ago I got a 4 and a 5.9 on a nearby bog. Caught the big one on a 3:16 lure company NoBull frog. These frogs look great coming through the water. They don't last long though but they do include a bottle of repair glue so maybe get a little more life out of them. I lost a giant on the same pond last week. Had it on briefly, got a good look a it. Next level fish. It was right there, then it wasn't. Just sat in the boat dead quiet for a few minutes. Headed out again tonight 1 Quote
