Watching educational television with my son this AM. Mainly the show You Don't Know Dixie, which I highly recommend BTW. Well the show got me to thinking. What states make up the South? Apparently there are many answers to this. However I'm gonna have to disagree with the Census Bureau. I mean I realize all yall Yankees wanna be a part of this great place, but come on now. Maryland, West Virginia, and Delaware are NOT part of the South.

So what states do yall feel make up the South?

South Carolina on down its obviously the right answer because its right in the name

South Dakota?

Anywhere south of Kankakee IL. which is about an hour south of Chicago

Any states that was part of the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

It's not just location, the South is a culture. For example, northern Florida is South,

Miami is not. The general answer is everything below the Mason Dixon Line, which

includes West Virginia and Maryland. Kentucky may not be "south", but it's Southern.

So, this is how I see it:

TN, AL, MS, GA, LA, TX, NC, SC, MD, KY, AR, part of FL, VA and WV.

I'll agree with you on Southern Florida not being a part of the South. WV had their chance they chose to leave back in the 1800s though. I still can't bring myself to agree with Maryland though.

I feel like there is a lot more to being Southern than your exact location. I also think being Southern is a good thing, there are things that many people think of as "Southern" that will make many of us upset. I'm proud to be from the South, however I am not: a racist, a bigot, ignorant or uneducated, nor do I feel the South will rise again

Well not to hijack the thread, however what do people call "The Northeast"? On this forum its classified as (Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont). Now all well and good but to me its the New England states ( Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont) plus Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Michigan is about as north east as Wisconsin. Just goes to show you its all in where you are from.

I ain't whistlin dixie, but the southern counties in NJ were south of the Mason Dixon Line in the 1860's.

Parts of Pa are very southern like. Pittsburg on one end, Philly on the other and Alabama in between :-)
