EDIT EDIT EDIT 6/18, 8am: I originally thought this was 8lbs, but due to a faulty scale, it is only around 6.5lb. Thank you everybody for your inspections and comments.!

 

Hello everybody! Been reading stuff on this site and forum for a while now, and now I have something to share! New PB!! Caught this 6.5lb 21" bass on Lake Wingra in Madison, WI on 6/17/2013. Was fishing on the end by the dam in the water on a boat, water was only a couple feet deep. Fought hard with the lilly pads. After catching it, I was so excited I trolled the boat to shore and a kind lady snapped a picture for me. Bass was let go to fight another day. I am not sure I will ever catch a larger one in WI, the state record is 11lbs 3oz and that was 73yrs ago...

 

Equipment I used:

7' St.Croix mojo bass plastic rod

Quantum Escalade HD reel

30# power pro braid line

 

Lure:

Strike king shim-e-stick worm on 3/0 gamakatsu wacky hook, fished wacky style.

great fish, definitely a monster and a true beauty, but i am getting this eerie feeling that you maybe perhaps by some minuscule chance did not actually weigh the fish...

Very nice. That wacky set-up is proven man it's proven. And as far as "him not weighing the fish" I could maybe agree with you there. Because he didn't give any ounces at the end of the pounds. But 8 pounds looks pretty accurate. Nice fish.

Very nice northern LM.  At 8 lbs I would think it would be more than 21" though.  Congrats!

Hate to say it but, it looks more like a 4-5lb. seeing you put 21" and it's belly size adds to the conclusion.

 

Nonetheless great catch and still a rarer achievement.

A 21" bass is usually only around 6# that's about what I would guess it would be by looking at the pics. Find a length to weight converter for bass online it will give you a better idea.

For northern latitudes, a 21" fish is a whopper so it's a good catch indeed.

Down here in Tennessee, I've only caught 10 21" fish in the past few seasons since I've been recording weights. According to my handy Excel spreadsheet, the average weight of those 10 fish is 4.70 pounds with the heaviest fish 5.46 pounds. On 16" fish, I have 87 weights on file - with the average weight being 1.83 pounds with a heaviest of 2.31 pounds. Fish are a bit skinny in my little lakes though....

The fish in my avatar was only 21.5" long and went 7.76 pounds, but it was 17" around too so a 21" fish weighing 8 pounds isn't impossible. Congrats on the fish no matter what it weighed!

you sure that scale wasnt set to start at 2 or 3 lbs when you weighed that fish? i have that scale and almost made that mistake before. im not calling you a liar, and congrats for a nice catch, but them fish look smaller than what youre saying...

VERY good point. I just went to my tackle box and checked it, it indeed was set to about 1.5lbs and stuck. So this fish was around 6.5#. The zero-out knob on the back must of moved somehow. I always thought the scale was right on based on the digital scales I compared it to, but at some point down the line the zero out turning knob must of been moved.

 

Thank you everybody for the knowledge and inspections. It's still my personal best easy! Time to buy a digital scale! I'll change original post to say its around 6.5.

 

I feel like a ******! So excited then let down by the scale, ahah! Hopefully i'll get a bigger one sometime soon!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!

 

As a general rule, we don't like people challenging fish that have been weighed and pictured.

When someone doesn't weigh a fish and asks "How big is this bass?" that's different and the

door is wide open.  It's not really that important how much your fish really weighed, this whole

deal is for fun! So, it's nice when the OP looks at these posts constructively, checks his scale

then comes back with a response. The mistake is totally understandable. No harm, no foul. It's

still a nice bass.

 

 

 

Thank you roadwarrior, I did not take the posts  negatively but more so as constructive criticism. Had about 2hrs today to fish, so took a video of this bass and the issue I had with the scale. Thanks guys!

Well i must say, i appreciate how you adjusted the weight as opposed to going on some random tangent of how it was supported by another scale or person or poor camera angle. It's a huge fish. You found the issue with the scale and like a man, manned up to it. You sir, are the man. 

My Pb was caught yesterday. 22" long and 5lbs 14oz so I'd say you're pretty close with 6+

What a gorgeous bass! I bet the fight was insane!
