Recommended Posts

Its christmas season sell me on a sub $200 shimano reel that I can do anything with. Probably picking up a new 7ftmh rod for a secondary jig rod.

What! Sell you on it. Don't you know it's the greatest reel ever made. It's assembled in japan by Budah himself.

On a serious note though. They've been around for a long time and have a huge fan base. They've proven themselves as a quality reel but I do a also feel there's a bit too much hype around some of their offerings. That's my .02

Saros, Stradic FJ, or a clearance Stradic Ci4 (if there are still any out there). They all have X Ship. You would not be disappointed with either one of these, just depends on how close you want to get to $200. I only use shimano for spinning reels, simply because I haven't found a brand of reels that I like better. Personally I dont have the money to fish the higher end reels so I stick to the saharas which have been great for me.

Calcutta 100B for a baitcaster on a MH rod. It's a quality reel. It's not too fast or too slow.

The place where I do most of my shopping has them for $199.99 to your door.

I'd say the Chronarch 200E7 or E6. I know it lists for $200 but I'm sure you can easily get it for less this time of year.

For some reason I thought you meant spinning, sorry about that.

Have 2, on G Loomis GL3 MH rods, and they are great. Bought them at the end of my fishing season, and used them about 4 times. Can't wait to get back at em'. Probably bought mine, the same place you bought yours. I am close enough that anything I order arrives the next day. Gotta love that!

The reels sell themselves.  If you buy one you will end up with a whole closet full of them.  One of the best parts of fishing Shimano is that you can return them for service for like $27 and they come back just like new mechanically.  My local Shimano service center has never repaired reels for me as well as the factory does.

Gander Mountain has $20 off $100 spent so you could get Cronarch $180 & free shipping.

OR

They have $50 off $250 spent so you get a Cronarch at $199.99 and some line like---  14# Sunline Super FC Sniper Line, 660-yd. $55 and that gets you the $50 off so like getting the 660yd spool for $5

If 14# line is good for your type of jig fishing though :Idontknow:  or anything that puts you at touch over $250

I'd stick with the E-series and avoid the Curado and Citica G. They're decent reels, but the quality is noticeably worse than with the E-series. There are more rough edges, the finishes aren't as well done, the side plate fits on worse, etc.; they're still very serviceable workhorse reels, but the quality has been downgraded. Personally, I'd go with a used Citica E before I'd buy either a Curado or Citica G.

at under 200 get a citica G or E and put boca 7's on the spool or the hawgtech bearings if they fit, pretty decent set up for less than 170.00

Farmer, you crack me up. I swear, I don't believe you could say good morning without injecting sarcasm. Nevertheless, I love reading your posts. Never know what's coming next. Hats off to the Don Rickles of BassResource.

You might have deep seated self-esteem issues if you have to be "sold" on getting a Shimano reel.  Once you touch a Calcutta 200 TEGT or a Calais, or a Core or any of the mid-level to higher end Shimano bait casting reels, it will speak to you and you won't want to fish with any other reel.  I presume that applies to the lower end Shimano reels as well, but I don't have any so I can't speak to that.

The hard part comes when you have an assortment of Shimano reels, some on jig rods, some on crank rods, some on spinnerbait rods,  and they are all talking to you - at once - saying "put me in, coach". .. …   That will test your decision making abilities.

I've owned 4 Shimano's (2 Citica G's, 1 Curado G and 1 Curado 51E). They're definitely quality reels, including the G series. Though, as stated already, I would stick with the E series if possible. I can maybe count the number of negative reviews I've seen on Shimano reels in your price range on one hand. While some prefer other brands (me included), I don't think you can go wrong with a Citica on up.

Curado or chronarch e series are hard to beat i like the 200's for casting and line capacity but the 50 size is great forflipping and pitching and palms better all at or under 200

Just gettin into the baitcasters I bought my first one this year, a Citica 201E and LOVE it.... My buddy got the G and there is a def difference in the two( I like mine better lol) I was lucky enough to get it at a steal as it was the last E they had left and they were clearing out for the new shipments, $93 out the door...

I don't think you can by a better spinning reel for twice the money over a Shimano,,,,when it comes to baitcasting reels there a couple I find better for 1/2 the price. If you want a good Shimano in that price range, drop under $150.00 on a Stradic in whichever size suites your style of fishing,,,,,and you will never find a better spinning reel new near that price.
