Cold water fishing is my favorite time for jerkbaits and my next few fishing trips I plan to really focus on getting better with retrieve, cadence, presentation. Do you guys have any suggestions on ways to get better and do you have some favorite jerkbaits that you recommend?

there are tons of good jerkbaits out there from many companies i am just addicted to the ghost minnow, aurora shad and bluegill patterns from LC lol

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like most good jerkbaits run around $15 each, anybody got a line a good buy?  Trying to be thrifty as possible

down deep husky jerks are a little more resonable. The jerks from Luck E Strike RC stick or the classics look just like megabass vision 110s. The RC's are on sale at cabelas for $6 online only

Cant go wrong with the KVD, rapala husky jerk, yozuri, or BPS jerks either

LC Pointer 78sp, can find em for 10$ if ya shop around... The rapala x-raps are really nice too for half the cost. Slow retrieve, snap the lure every few feet let it sit for 15-20secs and continue the retrieve snap cadence again... Ya can normally tell what the fish want in the first couple cast.

Besides the XS4 that was a secret I like LC pointers in ghost minnow with size being determined by the size of the local baitfish.

 

Other less expensive baits:

 

Smithwick Rogue = Super and suspending are hard to beat at any price range.

Rapala Husky jerk = I like chrome/black back, white, CW (which is discontinued but you can still find them).

 

Another bait I recommend isn't a jerkbait but I fish it like one, the Rapala suspending shad rap catches a lot of fish for me in the same situation you would use a deeper diving jerkbait.

We have things with teeth here that steal jerkbaits like they are going out of style, and you don't get bit with steel leaders, so I keep it on the cheap side....less than $10 usually. I have caught tons of fish on Rapala Huskey Jerks and X-Raps..........I don't use them any more, but they do work, and work well. Currently I am using and like the Luck-E-Strike Clunn baits, the SK KVD's, and the Storm Twitch Sticks.

I like my X-Raps and Rogues and the Storm Twitch Stick has really impressed me, the LC Pointers and Megabass 110 are for certain situations now. I would like to get some XS4 baits, one of my favorites is my Xt3 deep in pearl melon, that is the one bait I can use after a cold front pushes the fish out to the first drop and know with certainty that I'll catch a few. The EEratic shad is another Good Xcalibur jerkbait on the discontinued heap, Cabelas just had them for less than 5 bucks each but sold out.

Unfortunately the XCalibur XS4 were discontinued to make the EErratic Shad, now that's done for, too. I really liked the XS4- like a high end Rogue, but reasonably priced. The XS3 was really good too - one of my best "Finesse" jerks.

Suspending Rouge tuned just right..generally clown is the flavor.

I have heard good things about Smithwick, but I don't have a lot of experience with them.  I will probably try a suspending model and reel it down a few feet and then start twitching.  Sound about right?

Yep, thats the same size my buddies use. Fall and spring seem most productive with the 110's
