Attended a sale the other day and purchased a mint condition St. Croix Avid spinning rod model AVS68MXF one year old rated 3/16 to 5/8 oz.. along with a Shimano Stradic C14 1000 spinning reel still in the original box, also mint condition. Purchased both for $135.00.

 

I have never done a lot of shaky head fishing or whacky worm fishing, Will this combo do the job? Also would like to throw occasional small crankbaits 1/4-3/8 oz.. I know the price was right, but will this particular combo do the job for me or should I look for something else? For the money I might just make it work!

It will do the job just fine. Rod may be a little stiff for shakyheads, but it will suffice. Congrats on a great deal.

Great combination and EXACTLY what I might recommend for an "all around" spinning outfit.

The reel and the rod are worth more seperately than you paid for both!

As I said in the original post, I have done very little shacky head or whacky worm fishing but would like to learn how and do more but always thought a 6 foot 8 inch M power spinning rod was to short and heavy. I'm not a specific equipment technique guy, can't afford to be, just looking for quality gear that will do the job. I fish with a old Navy buddy of mine who has a set-up for everything you can think of and and not cheap stuff either.

add some 10# Sufix and your choice of Fluoro ir mono leaders between 6 and 10# and your set with one D Y N O M I T E  outfit. That baby is is a sweet light jigging (under 1/2 oz) outfit along with the other suggestions!

Sounds like it was an estate sale, either that or a divorce sale.  Reminds me of the old "sell my Porche and send me the money" joke. 

 

I would put 15 pound braid on that with a 8-10lb fluoro leader. 

Put some 6# sufix 832 (comparable to 10# power pro) on that sucker and you are good to go. 6-8# fluoro leader if necessary. 

 

6# sufix 832 breaks at 1# heavier than power pro 10# and is the same diameter, just a FYI so you don't think I'm nuts suggesting 6# braid. 

I have the same rod paired with a Stradic 2500 FH.  It is a great all around set up.  It will be great for that purpose.

Great wacky worm rod and will work well for many purposes. You got a steal on them!
