Depends a whole lot on the conditions. Spring time it would be a jerkbait, summer time it's usually a bone colored super spook jr or a Ned rig.

If my life depended on catching a smallmouth, no matter the time of year, depth, or conditions, I would drop shot a 3" gulp leech.

All of my smallmouth fishing is in shallow rivers in late spring thru early fall...Baby Boo Jig w/ an Ultravibe Speed Craw trailer, T-Rigged Finesse Worm (1/32-1/8oz weight), 4" GYCB Senko Weightless or T-Rigged with 1/32-1/8oz, Zara Puppy, White 3/8oz double willow Spinnerbait w/ a Swimmin Fluke Jr. trailer, KVD 1.5 in stained water.

If you want a "real" smallmouth 'round these parts  :eyebrows: : S-waver 168, Spro BBZ JR 6" floater.

Mine is a plastic stick worm, a shakey head craw combo, and a drop shot plastic. I like walking baits a lot too. Knot (invite you to groan here) a fan of jerkbaits.

Go to bait for smallmouth is a dropshot setup throwing roboworms, senkos and snipers. Other than that I throw a hula grub or topwater. I have had so much success with those there is no need for any other bait.

Old school here. 3-4in. tube in green or brown. Many different rigging options, but an internal 3/16oz jig won't let you down 90% of the time.

Same, but I add Junebug and Smoke/purple flake to the color list.  Dunno why, but the smallies I chase seem to like purple too.
