What Brand Hooks.

Featured Replies

Depends on the application. There are different characteristics with each brand and the style of the hook.

Generally for most days I use Gammy and Mustad.  But I have tried Trokar, Owner and even BPS's line.  None of them have failed me.

Gamakatsu and Owner.

Whatever I can get a decent deal on I have gammys, owners, mustads, Vmc's, trokar's and BPS. All of them are good hooks. By the way does anyone know who makes the BPS hooks?

Tight lines

Andrew

I was a victim of the bargain Bass Pro hooks. I bought a bunch on sale and have been working through those as quickly as possible.

I'm moving to VMC. Fantastic hooks and better prices. The Ike Approved line is good. I bought some flipping hooks in the Ike and Heavy Duty versions and I wouldn't hesitate to get the extra hook for the same money on the Ike. Their EWG and other standards are fine as well.

Eagle Claw has some flipping hooks that I'd like to try. I think they're about the same deal as with the VMC, maybe cheaper.

I use mainly Owner and Gamakatsu trebles. Gotten to where I use the H2O EWGs for all my worm fishing. Plenty sharp and for $5 for a 20 pack it doesn't hurt when I lose one.

Owner for twist locks and weighted hooks.

Gammy for all others

Mike

This.

Gamakatsu and Owner.

Gamakatsu, except for tubes. Those get the Trokar tube hook.

Hootie

x2

Over time I probably use them all.  Some of my favorites though...

Mustad KVD Triple grips on my crankbaits, squarebills, rattletraps, and cranks with a lip.
Gamakatsu round bends I use on my topwaters and ripbaits
Owner Mosquito hook for my weightless and wacky baits
Gamakatsu splitshot/dropshot
Gamakatsu heavy cover flippin (glue the bait keeper)
and some Gamakatsu EWG

30 years ago, you had to be very picky about the hooks you selected. And I remember hand honing each and every hook every time I tied one on. These days however, I do not believe there is a significant variation in quality control amongst the major hook manufacturers. If there was, they would not be in business long these days! Competition in the angling community is intense, especially on the tournament circuits.

I am still a fan of the Gamakatsu brand. Have never had them fail me and the sharpness is just fine. Day in and day out, they get the job done. Trokars are suppose to be "really" sharp. If you say so! I've tried them and cannot see the difference myself - especially at twice or three times the cost of a Gammy! I guess I'll stick with my Gammys that have served me so well, over many, many years of hard angling.

Apparently, like lots of different guys here, I fish lots of different brands.  On those occasions when I lose a fish, which happens more than I would like, I don't think that it is the fault of whatever hook I happen to be using at the time.  I blame it on operator error, if I must have a separate culprit, I blame it on barley pop, which occasionally slows my reaction time..

I only use Owner hooks , My favorite are the cutting point hooks - ST41's (treble hooks) , rig'n hooks (wide gap hooks) . Beast hooks( swimbait hooks) . And the oversize worm hooks for 10"+ worms .

I'm an Owner fan.  I do use gamakatsu, Mustad, and a few others but I'll choose Owner first.

Used Owner and VMC for years but I found Moaner hooks and I have to say they are the best hooks I have used in a long time--only use Matt's hooks now--good heavy sharp flipping hooks and weighted hooks--you might want to check them out--checked Moaner Hooks out and I have not looked back--fast and very fair shipping cost and a great hook--check them out and I think you will be as sold as I am--Disclaimer--I have no association with Moaner Hooks except as a customer

I really like the bass pro hooks $7 for 25 ain't bad, and imo they're good quality.

I was a big gammy fan and then academy came to town. Lol.

Its kind of silly, but day in day out ....I use the H2o brand hooks and for tournements I use Gammy. Its a mental thing and makes no real sense. I have never had the first issue with the academy hooks and can't even one time think of a time I missed a fish and felt it was the hooks faul. Like I said- its a mental confidence thing. Like I'm "stepping up" because its game time- even though Im not sure I could point out a reason the gammy is "better" than the h2o.

For flippin- trokar on game day- vmc everyday. Same deal.

I'm weird.

Gamakatsu form me although all the others are fine.
