Do you let the chatter fall and hop, hop, hop it along the bottom or do you throw it and do a steady retrieve such as a spinnerbait? First year fishing them was last year and didn't have much luck. Wanted to see if there was anything I could change. 

Generally, it's a change up to a spinnerbait for me, though that doesn't mean it's 100% correct. That's just how I use it.

Same here. A lift and fall retrieve might get a good wobble but for a slow hop on the bottom other jigs might be better. You never know though. I have luck with spinners sometimes fishing them like a jig as in dropping along side cover. 

I use it just like I do a spinnerbait, just a little slower most of the time.

Both for me. Normally i will retrive it like a spinnerbait, steady retreive or stop n go or change speeds on a constant retreive. Othertimes i will work it like a swim jig and bounce it, retrive, and/or let it fall, especially shooting piers and such. Its a pretty versatile lure to me. Often i will even do both on consecutive casts over the same spot and see if i get a better reaction one way or the other.

I fish it close to the surface and vary my retrieve but always keep that blade moving. Just watch out, if there's pike around they love it!

Both....sometimes I'll even try vertical jigging it.  That way, it buzzes as pull it up, then your plastic trailer goes inot action on the way back down. 

 

But, Ive only caught fish on them whilst in spinnerbait mode. 

A lot of it just depends on the mood of the fish and the water temp, but for the most part chatterbaits are best on a straight retrieve and the erratic action and speed of the lure is what causes the strike.

 

You can fish it like a jig but if your in a high pressure situation and the fish gets too good a look at it he aint gonna bite

 

If its going by super fast he has only a split second to strike or not to strike and this in my opinion is where the bait really shines

I use it almost identicle to the way I do a swim jig, but when I'm looking for more flash and vibration. I don't, however, swim it through weed cover.

I throw them like a spinnerbait and start out going fast with a bulge under the surface style action, but I mess around with retrieve speed, stop and go, or will simply shake it every few feet during the retrieve.

 

I like to use the chatterbait in situations where other people are maybe ripping traps out of grass, In the Summer I seem to do better with the heavier versions fished a bit deeper or near the bottom and ripping through weeds will wear out your arm, but sometimes it is a great option compared to a swim jig or trap etc.

 

Versatile lure that generates some awesome strikes at times. Trailers are a big part of the action and removing the skirt is popular or trimming it back and the GYB swim shads are a great trailer, swim senko, rage baits, options are endless and be creative since it is a fun style of fishing.

I use it like a spinnerbait, varying speeds and trailers depending on what works that day.

This might break the forums but I put a chatter blade on a megastrike shake2 pro shakeyhead with a skirt and a craw trailer. I did that to see if its more versatile because for most chatterbaits its a constant retrieve. I might pulse it or let it fall a bit but its not like a true jig.

Retrieve is up to your imagination, burn it, slow roll it, hop it off the bottom, rip it then let it fall, etc, etc.

Most of the time I fish them like a spinnerbait.  Let it sit on the bottom for a minute and then start to slow roll on the retrieve.

Spinnerbait I guess. It's actually more of a swimjig for me. It's great ripping grass and I do that a lot. I can't say I have a set retrieve for them or anything. A stop and go with tiny quick pauses it pretty common for me. I'll throw some hops into it or do a few quick turns to speed it up and make it rise then fall back down to the level it was at.
