Gearing up for squirrels already.My woods truck was broke down last year and I couldn't go.This year I'm already chompin at the bit to go.

I hunt N Florida,mostly at Guana river.Theres a big oak hammock in there that offers fair to good squirrel hunting.Lots if hogs too.

I love hunting in general,but with my limited schedule I can throw a squirrel trip together pretty quick. and it's hard to beat fried squirrel!!

Anyone else like squirrel hunting???

I'm prepping for deer season; the squirrels sure do like to run around my stand and make me think they're a deer though.

Ever tried Rib Eye?  lol!  Have not hunted or eaten squirrel in many moons!

When I started hunting that was my specialty. I'd sit on the edge of a corn field with my 410 and just wait. Come back to my uncles place with my limit. To me it was more fun that deer hunting cause I never got a shot at deer but squirrels were fun. 

Squirrels and rabbits make for great pot pies!

I spent some time sighting in my Savage MK II G w/Vortex 2x7  last spring.  Got 'er splittin hairs now with 40gr solids so them criitters are going in the gravy!  I'll be getting it out soon again just to confirm and then I'm ready for the leaves to drop.  Small game hunting is still a blast!

I used to hunt squirrels all of the time

there was an older woman down the road that would fix them for her and her spouse

once they died I quit hunting them

I don't eat them anymore and I don't kill things I don't eat

I haven't hunted squirrels in years, but as a deer hunter, these crack me up.

Funny and so true. Any deer hunter knows this. Can't tell you how many times I heard russling in the bush and got my gun up and out comes a squirrel or two. 

Not to mention the jays!  Alarms of the woods!

Squirrel hunting I enjoy because it is like a hike and if I see something I can shoot it.

I went out 3 or 4 times this year and worked my but off fer my limit twice. Most were on the ground and caught as they hit the tree's barking at me!

 

See we had ZERO NUT's this year,,, I mean none, no oaks Red or White, no Hickory nuts, notta, and very few Walnuts in my area. So what Squirrel I did locate were hitting the corn fields for food. I have never seen a year where are mast  crop was so poor. 

There's a decent amount of nuts where I hunt, humans included.But Ive only been once and it was too windy so we went after hogs instead.

I'll probably go this Saturday .Got a big oak hammock I hunt.Its public though,so we can't bait with corn here in FL.o n public land.

I LOVE hunting squirrels! I have a Savage .17HMR and a BLACKHAWK! 3-9x40 on it. I used to hunt them a much more often than I do now. With the .17, you have to go for headshots. I love waiting for the perfect shot. I'm going to start shooting my .17 out to 350 yards for fun soon. I love that rifle.

don't know if baiting squirrel is legal or not here in Ohio,, but we have fields full of bait to hunt around here that is legal,,,,

Yup..the .17 will mangle a squirrel for sure.  Head shots result in no head!  Truth is, a good pellet rifle will make the majority of squirrel shots but rimfires are more fun!

I havent hunted squirrels since my squirrel dog died 18 years ago . She was half malamute . When she would locate a squirrel she would sit on her haunches and stare up the tree and whine . She never barked . You should have seen her rabbit hunt . She would get on top of a brush pile and jump up and down on it , trying to scare a rabbit out for me to shoot .She learned juat by watching my actions . A super smart dog .

 

 A friend of mine squirrel hunted with an old  half blind and deaf Australian Shepard . Man , she was a good one, as long as we were hunting in her home area . If we took her someplace else she would get scared because her eyesight and hearing was so poor but there was nothing wrong with her nose  .

Hunting no, but I have become quite good at trapping Squirrels and Chipmunks. Squirrels love trying to get in my attic and Chipmunks love burrowing into my sprinkler system box and causing havoc.

 

I tried making some homemade traps and after a few trips to the drawing board I found one that works. Every time I feel sorry for the critters I think of the money they have caused me.

HECK YA! we like young reds or gray squirrels up here, they are tender we tried hot wing squirrel once. fried older reds then put them in crock pot with bottle of franks redhot . kind of like hot wings , thought those guys were going to eat the crock pot too. we,ll try just about anything once

During lulls in the pheasant & grouse hunting, I used to devote a couple Saturdays to gray squirrels.

I would only spend about an hour on stand at day's end, when the squirrels fed the heaviest.

I'd wait until I had about 3 or 4 squirrels spotted in the canopies of the white oak trees.

I'd memorize the position of each squirrel which continually shifted, then picked the right moment

to launch a blitzkrieg. Since the first shot would route all the squirrels, the salvo had to pan quickly

from left to right. Time couldn't be wasted marking them down, which made retrieving the squirrels

the toughest part.

I watch about 25 or more of these critters every day jumping from the oak trees to the palm trees in my back yard. They even run across the pool cage! 

 

When I was was a kid I ate squirrel twice and hated it. Must have been the way they were cooked cause a lot of folks love em.

MIKE you have got so many reads on this topic, that I am beginning to believe I am going to have to add a 12 gauge to my rod locker ,as one of my favorite poles.LOL
