Dam fishing

Featured Replies

Anybody do it? Bunch of dams in CenTex and the Hill Country. Seems to be the most consistent bite if there is even a little water coming over the dam (mostly low-head dams in the area). At least that's what most of the bass guys around here say. Haven't had any luck yet. How do yall do it and what do yall use? Tend to be smaller waters and low head dams here, but there are big dams and larger spillways also.

I'm a river rat.  My preferred fishing is below Pickwick Dam.

Yep, all the time, especially for hybrids and catfish but bass too.

Like bluebasser in my area dams are the prime spot for big hybrids and catfish. I don't fish up close to them for bass but the first mile down river is always hot when the water is moving

I fished below Pickwick when we were stationed at Fort Campbell. Caught some nice spots down there. In CenTex and the Hill Country there are a lot of low-head dams so the bass fishing is supposed to be pretty good. I've caught some, but I've seen other guys really catch some numbers and size. Been almost 7 years since I've done that type of fishing also, so a refresher is definitely needed.

Is there any lure/technique that you use more than another that produces more under the dam. A moderate flow under the dam is best? Any change in technique with little flow or high flow?

I fish the Wisconsin river quite a bit. Right up by the dams seems to hold more white bass, walleye, and musky. The good smallmouth fishing starts a mile or so below the dam. My favorite all around River bait is a keitech fat swing impact on a 1/8 oz jighead or a tube with a 1/4oz jighead

I fish below Mississippi river dams and smaller dams . I generally use inexpensive sinking lures because lots of baits get lost . Jig and Grubs are used the most . I catch largemouths , smallmoutsh , whites , hybrids ,  walleye  sauger , cats , crappie , drum and even snag giant carp .

Add a little more weight or fish the eddies and current breaks. On weighted hooks normally 1/8 but 3/16 will get you down in faster water. The rage rig works great.

I usually try and look for something that the bass can hide behind around a dam that is blocking the current.  Usually a rock pile, but every once in a while there will be a log jam piled up.  Then all I have to do is find the bass.

Yep. That's what I was looking for. Gonna try Slider Spider jigheads and the Rage Rig.
