Lures to stock up on for the new year

Featured Replies

I am going to be going to cabelas what lures should I get for both smallmouth and largemouth bass.

That's a pretty open ended question. What kind of stuff do you fish? Shallow lakes? Deep lakes? Rivers? Water color? What lures do you usually get bit on? Boat or bank fishing?

Seems like you can't go wrong with a few senko packs in the bag, maybe some jigs, and worms.

I fish shallow lakes, ponds, small rivers and I fish from the bank the water is stained

Soft plastic swimbaits, small crankbaits and an assortment of worms, senkos, tubes, and flukes with accompanied hardware such as hooks and weights should do. Also some spinnerbaits with both colorado and willow leaf blades.

  • Shallow crankbaits Mann's baby -1 casts great and works great Baby bass has been great color but many colors work.
  • Worms like the Mann's Jelly worm 9" or Culprit 10" Texas rigged Grape or motor oil or junebug colors work great.
  • Some creature baits like the Havoc Pit Boss or NetBait Paca Craw Texas rigged or as trailers awesome color choices some dark and some lighter colors would be a good base.
  • 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz spinner baits solid white in color and a black or dark color I prefer the Pepper Custom and original H&H brand
  • 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz chatter baits/bladed jigs solid white in color and a black or dark color
  • Frog brand of your choice one black bottom one white
  • 4.8" Keitech Swing Impact Fat on swim jig  Houdini color has worked for me but try any you like they all work.
  • Seibert Outdoors Jigs aren't from Cabela's but you need these even if you think you don't. I really really like the 1/2 oz Dredge Brush version they work in numerous situations and quality is second to none for the price. Oh and they support the forms. :)

There are more but this is some of my mainstay.

Don't forget some Ned baits and jig heads.

A few Bomber A's in Firetiger Craw. Do you own a crankbait? If not buy these. Do you own any Rat-L-Traps?

Bandit 100s have been my number one river smallmouth Crankbait for many years. I have tried many and not found one that out produces it.

Squarebills

Worms like senkos and bottom hoppers

Lizards/creatures

Terminal tackle

What colors

I have alot of soft plastics and hard lures.. but honestly I think these soft plastics could cover.me all year if need be. They are my absolute favorite. And my favorite color too. All GY . Senko, IKA, DT hula grub.

Btw I fish Ohio too. And these baits are dynamite here.

Funny you should start this thread.

I will be taking inventory of my plastics this weekend and my moving baits next weekend.

I know of some crankbaits I want but I have to order them online.

Good discussion.

With regard to fishing the Fat Boy Ika, I'd suggest you PM 'Roadwarrior'

It's pumpkin with black and green flake.

Rigging the IKA is no big secret. weightless with  4/0 extra wide gap hook. Rigged skirt up.

You claim you have no Rat-L-Traps. You don't have to break the bank on these either. You only need three to start with. A chrome w/ black back, chrome w/ blue back and a gold w/ black back this is all you need to get catching. I would buy the 1/4 oz. Mini Traps.

If the Cotton Cordell Rattling Spots are easier for you to find, they are as good and as productive.

5/16 Booyah Baby Boo jig, I stock up on the watermelon red, black/blue, and Texas craw.

I fish similar waters year round and always have a couple of these with me. You can pitch it, drag it, swim it etc. and fish will bite it in every season .

must haves!

Pop X

Picasso Shockblade

Revenge Deep Runner

S-Crank 1.2

Cavitron Buzzbait

They all catch fish . What do you want the lures to do in the water you fish ? Are you fishing in grass , logs , deep , shallow ..?

I would go with some topwater frogs, Squarebill and lipless crankbaits, as well as some senkos.

Get everything this guy mentions. he guides:

Friend him and talk with him.

If my box was empty, I'd go get a bag of Trick Worms in watermelon and one in bubble gum. And I'd get one shad, one chartreuse and one brown craw color Bomber Model A medium diver. I'd get a 1/2 oz white and one chartreuse tandem willow leaf spinnerbait.

If I only had the money for one bait, it would be the Trick Worm. I always have one tied on weightless and usually have one T-rigged, 3/16 oz. It flat catches bass.
