If you could only have 5 rod and reel combos what would they be? not specific but for example 7' MH with a 7.2:1 etc.

6'6 medium/fast spinning rod with a  3000 size spinning reel | for light lures.

 

7' medium heavy/fast casting with a 7.1:1 + speed reel | basic use rod, worms, spinnerbaits etc.

 

7'6 heavy/fast casting with a 6.4:1 - 7.1:1 speed reel (with strong drag) | use with braid for frogging flipping, good jig rod if use with leader.

 

6'6 medium/fast casting with a 7 speed reel | top water/jerkbaits.

 

7'3 medium heavy/moderate casting with a 6.4:1 | cranking rod.

7'3" MHM casting 6 speed reel for cranks

 

7'2" HF casting 7 speed reel for frogs/jigs/heavy weighted plastics

 

7'2" MHF casting 6 speed reel for spinnerbaits/chatterbaits/worm fishing

 

8'0" XHF casting 6 speed  reel for swimbaits

 

6'10" MF spinning 6 speed reel for drop shot/shakey head/jerkbaits

7' M/XF spinning - weightless plastics, finesse jigs/plastics

7' M/F casting - small moving baits

7' MH/F casting - medium moving baits

7' MH/XF casting - jigs/plastics

7' H/F casting - anything in heavier cover, larger moving baits, frogs, bigger jigs/plastics

 

I would add a ML/XF spinning and a XH/F casting before a moderate action cranking rod only because I don't use deep cranks. I find a slower fast action or a moderate fast just fine for medium depth cranks and is way more versatile.

most of the rods would be between 6'8"-7'3".

8.x:1 for baits that are moved by the rod (and buzzbaits!)

7.x:1 for everything else

 

If I could start over again, I'd limit myself to 5 or 6 combos.  I'd also limit the amount of lures I've bought over the years that I don't use.  It would be nice to have some of that money back.  The way I prefer to fish, I could do just fine with the following.

 

1.  7'1" med/xf with 7.xx:1 reel

2.  7'4" mh/xf with 8:1 reel

3.  7' mh/mf with 6.xx:1 reel

4.  6'9" ml/f with 7:1 finesse casting reel

5.  7'2" heavy/fast with 8:1 reel

 

This list is basically my most used combos in my current line up. 

7' MF spinning with a 2500 or 3000 spinning reel  for heavier weightless plastics and light hard baits

6'9''  MLXF spinning with a 2500 spinning reel  for anything finesse (Drop shot, small tubes, ned, neko, etc)

7' MHF Casting with a 6.xx:1 reel for chatters, spinners, worms, even frogs

6'6'' MF with a 7.xx:1 reel for jerks and just about any topwater

7' MM with a 5.xx:1 reel for any cranks except deep cranks.

 

been there and this is what I wish I had when I only had 5.  now I have 18...... what is wrong with me lol

I carry more than I need, with these three I can cover pretty much everything but them 2+ oz swimbaits:

 

1.- M/F spinning rod

2.- MH/M casting crankbait rod

3.- H/F casting rod

 

If I had to add more just add another MH/M and a H/F. 

 

There you go, "only" 5 rods.

7'6" H/F 7.1:1 or faster. flipping, frogging.                                                                                                                           7'3" MH/F 7.1:1 jig, worm.                                                                                                                                                   7' MH/MF 6.4:1 spinnerbait, swim jig, lipless crank, chatterbait.                                                                                               7' M/F 7.0:1 jerkbait, walking baits.                                                                                                                                       7' M/F spinning. wacky, poppers, shakey head.                             

5 is for rookies................I can, and have done it all with three......but I carry more than that. What's the line from the wizard of oz? Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain........anyways, when I hop on someone else's boat I take 3.
