Buying binge how do you control it?

75 posts in this topic

With the fishing season about to get started up here in Michigan I've been buying lures uncontrollably.  I'm not spending the money that's for the mortgage or food or anything like that but I'm sure spending more than I should be.  How do you all control yourselves when on a buying binge?  In the last 24 hours I've bought 5 Red Eye shad, underspins from Ebay, my first Megabass jerbait (which is probably opening a whole other can of worms).

for me it's a battle of time if i hold onto something long enough while standing in a shop i think so do i really need this or am i just buying it because i want it. you need to wait for that impulse to pass and you make a decent decision

It has to do with people's minds... The only thing that can help you is yourself. Not what anybody is about to say to you. The fact that you have extra money to spend is going to allow you to spend it as you want to... Some people can save... Some people are impulsive...

Sounds like you may be a little impulsive lol. I am too.

Step back and fish with what you have... Buy your kids something . Save for a vacation.

We need money for our necessities... Any extra is for our own enjoyment. If buying lures makes you happy then continue to buy !!

It sounds like you want to stop... So the simple answer is to just stop... It is that easy. Have a little self control. You don't cheat on your wife do you ? (Assuming you're married ) is there not many other beautiful woman you see every day?? Have you ever had the opportunity to cheat and didn't pursue? If so , You have self control.. just apply it to your money...

After all, there are alot of worse ways to spend your money than buying fishing lures... and you cant take the money with you to the grave. So. Good luck

I think Ebay is the worst for me.  Because you have the opportunity to find things significantly cheaper than in stores and no tax and free shipping a lot.  I'd say this is my biggest downfall.

I think the psychology of getting a deal that is my problem.

This is a foolproof method for controlling that binge buying. Go to this website and just start throwing everything and anything you have ever wanted into your cart.

No, wait a minute, that seems to have the opposite effect to what was intended. :D

Give up.  The Bait Monkey will always win.  Why fight it?  You know the first time you don't buy a lure you want, your best friend will use that lure and catch fish every cast, while you get skunked.  If he is a good friend, he will loan you the lure, then never let you forget it.  Think about  how will it feel to have the ten dollars in your pocket instead of the magic lure on you line?  Don't worry, most of the time in a divorce the wife will try and get useless things like the house,  car, jewelry, time share, and other things of no real value, but you will most likely be able to keep the priceless items like your rods, reals, and  fishing lures.

I don't think I have a problem at all.  Although I did just place an order on Dicks website for $50 of lures this morning.  Whopper Ploppers are sale for $10.  Two Ploppers and a few other things and I got to $50 real quick.  Luckily I just got my tax refund back today.

Usually what i do is I make a cart of things I want, then after a few days I'll sit down with what I currently have and cross check it with the cart, and see if it is truly something that will fill a hole in my arsenal, or if I can get the job done with something I already have. I still splurge sometimes but it helps keep me grounded.

The hard part is when you come across a sale

Stay off of Ebay.  Always a sale!

Go in your wifes closet and count all her shoes, purses and dresses. From there, determine who has the spending problem.

As soon as you understand the #1 key to consistently catching bass is between your ears not between the folds of your wallet.

Getting started? Man it starts once ice is gone lol. Sadly though I just got this boot off of my broken foot so I haven't been out yet.:(

For me, there is no cure to binge spending. I stop when I feel like I have everything for the year and a few extras. I've been buying lures, rods, and reels, and then things for the boat. It's an addiction, but it's a fun one.
