Secret Weapon Lures

Featured Replies

What are your "secret weapon" lures? Lures that work really well but are not as common or are relatively unknown? I'll start it off:

1. Mann's 1-minus crankbaits

2. Bagley b-minus lipless crankbait (runs shallower than other lipless cranks)

3. Yum swimmin' dinger wacky rigged (that tail gives it action other wacky rigged worms just down have)

4. Jawbone frog (finesse sized frog you can still cast)

5. Whopper plopper (I know their not that secret anymore but man it works)

My secret weapon lures are, what's the word? Ah, yes, secret...

Oh, and MY SF86 is properly filled out...

I'd say the baby 1- isn't a secret either. They're great baits & seem to get a lotta love on these forums. Prob cause they just flat out catch fish. ?

Mine would prob be a Zoom ultra vibe speed worm and magnum speed craws. Yeah, yeah I know these are well known, but prob not the way I fish them at times. I like to rig them weightless & weedless on a 5/0 Gammy or Owner EWG hook. I'll swim em near surface around sparse grass and lily pads like a finesse buzzbait. On calmer days this tends to work better than a noisy buzzbait or a ribbit swimming frog. I've caught bass up to 8 lbs doing this. Plus you can kill it and let the bait slow fall into gaps. That speed worm really comes thru grass & lily pads well too.

I don't have any secret lures (and I have yet to see any posted), but even if I did it wouldn't be a secret if i told you and the thousand other people reading this...

So far this year I've been killing them on a Megafrox Hop Frog 4.5 in vintage gray. Anything that reliably draws a topwater bite in Montana, much less in April is a winner in my book. I'd be willing to bet that no fish in the local lakes have never seen one and they are out-fishing soft body frogs 10-1.

Chartreuse dynamite gets them every time.

Whats really been my secret weapon is to pay attention to what most people are using on a certain body of water and do the opposite or use a more natural color. For instance if everyone loves chartreuse spinners or bladed jigs with silver blades ill use a bluegill pattern skirt with a black blade or swim jig seems to get the better bites size wise.

I do the same thing with the speed craw and do well with it.For some reason I don't do as well with the worms though.

My secret weapons? No secret, but the zoom baby brush hog is one of them.

A another less popular bait that I pull out every now and then is the Z- hog.
