Dedicated hard jerkbait rod

Recommended Posts

Looking for a hard jerkbait bass rod for 100, 115 size pointers, shad raps and rogues in the $!00-120 range using 10lb fc sniper. Have narrowed it down to a couple like St Croix bass-x 6'6 MF bxc66mf or Powell inferno 6104 6'10 M. Will consider others in the same price range. I have a daiwa fuego ct 8:1 that the bait monkey demands that I do something with. Thanks.

Whatever feels right to you, but the shad rap seems to be an outlier that might perform better for you with spinning gear...

My choice for throwing jerkbaits is an Abu Garcia Ike Series 6'4 inch delay series rod.  I like the feel and the look of it. They basically built a rod that should be 6'6 or 6'8" but made it with a shorter butt to avoid hitting your arm when you make that wrist/arm snap you use with a jerkbait. Take a look at this video.  I have a Daiwa Tatula Type R in a 6.3-1 on it and if fishes really well. I use mine for both bass and rockfish (stripers) here on the Chesapeake Bay. It runs around $130.  Be careful with too long a rod.if you fish from a boat often times it can hit the water.

Rod length seems to change for a few reasons.  Taller guys seem to like a little longer.  Style are you a tip down or to the side.  I like the 66mf avid but I tip down and I am tall.  Shorter guys like a 6 or 62 for that style.  If you jerk to the side you may like up to a 7 ish foot rod.

I fish all jerkbaits on the Tatula Elite 6'9" Seth Feider rod. Great tip for jerkbaits!

Thanks for all of the recomendations. I am tall and fish tip down primarily. I will look into the models suggested. Thats why this is the best site on the net. Info readily available. Thanks again.

Ask ten anglers a rod or technique question and you get ten different answers. What works for me may not work for you. I feel that one should ask what do you like/dislike about your rod and how do you fish it.

A rod I have and really like is the St Croix Mojo 7'1" medium fast (plastics) rod. I just like 7' jerkbait rod over a shorter one and I want a fast tip action to work the jerkbait. I have thrown jerkbaits on the ABU Garcia Winch medium/moderate rod, but it's a little more limber than I like.

I use the exact same Mojo bass rod for jerkbaits and it works well for me.

That 8:1 is faster than I personally would like for stick baits.. In that price range the Mojo topwater rod works really well. I like the tip better than the actual jerkbait rod..

I'm not a huge Lews fan, but some guys like the stickbait rod in the speed stick series.

I handled this rod at Bass Pro today and I was very impressed with it.

I use a Falcon Jason Christy 6'8" casting and a St Croix Premier 6'6" split grip spinning for my jerkbaits.

I enjoy fishing it. It is not as sensitive as say my G Loomis IMX jig rods, but I do not need it to be and it is half the price.

For what I paid and the job it needs to do it is a nice option. It is definitely a rod I would choose again if it broke or was lost.  I just think sometimes the Abu rods get overlooked because he is a bit of a nut.  I like Ike and I especially respect him because if you pay attention to him during a tournament he actually fishes Veritas, Ike rods and a few other Abu series rods.  They are the tools he makes his living uses, not just the company thta pays him and he uses something else.
