Richmond, VA - DICK'S LEAVING STONY POINT FASHION PARK

Recommended Posts

It's official, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Dick's, one of the three large anchor stores at the failing Stony Point Fashion Park is closing.

Hopefully they will have some nice fishing department sales.

Sigh...I guess when DSG leaves Patrick Henry Mall it's a sign

of the Mall Apocolypse. Sad.

Dick's reminds me of Gander Mountain's stores...big cavernous places with loads of merchandise...don't have p & l's or receivables or cash on hand with sales forecasts but can say locally Dlck's is struggling in our number 1 retail location...prime...one store elsewhere already closed...

Academy just opened new store to compliment an already existing successful store and is thriving...

business models matter...

I don't think Academy's business model will work either. The past years with Kmast, Sears, Toys R US, Gander Mountain, etc all failing shows that big box retail isn't a viable option anymore as the overhead cost and inconvenience. Whereas most all online retailers are thriving.

DSG is doing better than most, "outdoors" doesn't account for a major part of their business and they are doing online better than most of their competition. They are burning through a lot of $ to maintain market share, and even so their financials don't look terrible. They are a public company so the numbers are available.

Dick's made some poor business decisions earlier this year which were mostly political and didn't help the company too much, in my opinion. If it's anything like Gander, there will be killer sales more than half off normal price. I got so much stuff when our local Gander was closing down, really should've just bought more. Hard to resist the mid-high end stuff when it's half off or more.

Dick's in Ct. has really gone downhill in the fishing dept.

Used to have a good variety of stuff, not any more.

But they do have a lot of clothing and golf stuff......and not a lot of customers

And nothing of value was lost. Pizz poor politically correct decisions and a pizz poor selection.

I am not surprised that this store is closing and I will not be surprised if this company goes out of business in the next 5-10 years.

They’re building a new Dicks at Willow Lawn in Richmond so actually  it’s just moving.

The closest DSG to me is an hour away and they don't sell fishing stuff. It's all baseball, football, soccer, etc.

I have only been in DSG twice and both times the stuff was even pricier than BPS

Definitely. I would even say 3-5 years.

They now offer price matching, and will even match online prices.

There's five other DSGs within about 10 miles of the one that's closing at Stony Point. I think we'll be okay.

It would take at least that long to make a decision to leverage it out and work out a M&A strategy, and there is no indication they are anywhere near even considering that. They are expanding in both traditional and online.

I don't know about all the rest but my local DSG store is amazing. Fantastic customer service, pretty decent and stocked fishing department and the two times I had a product issue they didn't even blink. They replaced without question.

They have me as a loyal customer...

*Sigh*  The day I saw our Sears closing, I knew it was the beginning of the end for retail. We have both a DSG and AS and I'm wondering who will be first. My kids hardly ever shop the stores anymore and buy everything online, even their food. I'm just as bad, I can't remember the last time I bought any fishing gear in a store, it's just so much easier to buy online.

I have to agree with jeffo21. I was in a DSG recently and the prices on what I looked at were a lot higher than BPS. I wasn't super impressed with their selections on what they had in stock.

Maybe but they might last 5-10 years. The one closest to my house does not have most of the fishing gear I use and I have to go to Bass Pro Shop, Walmart, or online to get my fishing gear. The employees seem to not have much knowledge of bass fishing, running shoes, or other stuff I have asked their opinion on.

I used to spend a lot of money at Dick's and F&S. They made some public statements that I disagree with on a personal level and I haven't spent a penny with them since. They can all go under for all I care. If only we could get a BassPro around here.
