I was given 2 packs of 5" Yamamoto Double Tail Hula Grubs to play around with. What should I try to fish them on and in what size?

Id try a football head. Start with a 3/8 oz maybe?

Standard rigging is a 1/4 oz Gamakatsu football head jig for me but the hula can be fished on a ball head or as a trailer on any number of baits as well as c-rigged.  

Low-key the best chatterbait trailer there is. Adds a good subtle action that doesn't obnoxiously overwork the bait. The heavy Yamamoto plastic adds compact weight without too much bulk/lift. You can really creep a chatter bait along the bottom with them. Trim as needed to match your skirt 

 

Edit* forgot to mention after removing the "skirt" portion of the grub. Regular Yamamoto twin tail grubs work the same- I just buy the hula instead as I fish them Texas rugged on occasion.

I used to love those baits and have gotten away from them the past few years...As mentioned above, I used them on jigs but I think I like them best t-rigged. Anywhere from 1/8 oz to 1/2 oz, depending on the rate of fall I'm looking for or if I'm trying to get thru some matted weeds. Maybe heavier is the weeds I'm trying to get thru is being stubborn that day.

 

There are so many different ways to fish a grub.

A guy I fish with fills his livewell with them rigged on a 1/4oz Slider jighead. It's literally his go to bait.

I like to fish it on 1/8-1/4 stand up jig head. 

I like the 3/8 oz most of the time and 1/2 oz when I’m fishing > 25-30’  of water or when it’s windy. It fits perfectly and those Owner hooks are sharp. Happy fishing. It’s my favorite type of jig!

Looks like the first one is just a standard jig head and the other is labeled more of a flipping head. Should I go with more of an Arky style head? If I go with one of these jog style setups which is the right size for the 5" model? Would something more like a stand up shaky head be a better option?

@pauldconyers, what kind of waters you fishing in? Each jig will work anywhere but they will excel better in conditions they were designed for. For example: Arky heads work great around wood/laydowns and football heads in rocky bottoms. Learn what the jig heads were designed for and maximize your chance at a trophy.

I like  to texas rig them for river Smallmouths .

5" Hula grub in rock or sparsh cover I use GYCB weedless football head jig, black 3/8 or 1/2 oz. heavier cover then GYCB weedless a hula grub jig 3/8 to 1/2 oz.

 You can also Carolina rig Hula grubs using. 3/0 off set worm hook.

I throw them on either 3/16 or 1/4 oz VMC Rugby Jig, Texas rigged.  Dynamite!

I've had great success texas rigging them. I use an 1/8 oz tungsten weight with a bobber stop. River bass kill them.
