Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t be able to walk by it in the store. 

I fished Hula Poppers years ago. Never caught a fish on one. I see no reason to waste money on another bait I won't have any luck with.

If you were borne between 1940 to 1970 one of your first lures was probably a Hula Popper.

I definitely know what the original looks like. I had a handful. And I was born a little after 1970 ('74).

 

My father use to catch em on three lures, a purple Snag Proof worm,  a hammered nickel spoon,  and a school bus yellow Hula Popper. I was born in 71 and also used those three lures plus Hildebrandt spinnerbaits as a teen.  Now I have hundreds of lures probably should have kept it simple like Dad. I still have a few original Hula Poppers and might have to add the new one just because.

I've still got several I saved from my Dad. They're nearly identical. Biggest difference is the paint scheme and the FEATHERS on the rear treble. Overall, it's a nice redo and will surely catch fish as well as the old one. 

Original has caught me tons of fish over the years. I see no reason why this new version wouldn't catch them.

The rear hook looks kind of small in the photos, might just be a weird angle in the photo.

I don't know that I'd ever fish it, but I might buy one or two just to have them for nostalgia sake.

Only reason I quit fishing the original is during the 40 years I wasn't fishing the skirts broke down and became a inseparable mass, and I never looked for skirt replacements.  Bass in farm ponds couldn't resist them.

Already went through feather treble on back from bluegill nips and etc.

 

Awaiting replacement feather treble hooks.

 

I will say the popper moves a ton of water though, still a great bait.

Absolutely true. One of the first lures I ever purchased in the early 60's. And they still catch fish.

Strange to make this change.  For me the biggest problem with Hula Popper was the dull silver hooks and what they were attached to, they can't move around freely and get stuck often.

 

The best thing I liked was the rubber skirt, as most of the other popular poppers I know of, like Rebel or Rico or Magabass or KVD, etc, all have the short hair tail.  Seems like you need to get a frog nowadays to get the rubber skirt.  Possibly I'm wrong.

 

I like the rubber skirt, it seemed to me to make a difference.

Used to cut rubber bands into inch and a half strips and use bread tie to hold them on as short term replacements
