I usually put cat food in a skunk trap but they will eat anything

Um, I can’t remember if anything picture worthy happened last week or so. I’ll consult the archives ……..

looks like it was tough sledding until Friday when I caught a groundhog I had been after for 3 weeks and a raccoon I had been after for one week. The raccoon had been getting in a foundation vent down low behind a bush that was kind of hidden. 

 

 

 

 

Here’s the vent, the plastic factory one didn’t fit up under the siding so I had to lay in the mulch and use a mirror to rig up some wire mesh. Once again not raccoon proof but it should stop a stray cat or possum from walking in there in the future 

My friends' parents had woodchucks all around the house.  They were digging in some bad spots, like right along side a porch foundation post and under the garden shed.  I tried to trap them with a big conibear but had no luck.  I have no trapping experience.

 

I ended up using a CZ452 full stock .22 rifle and some CCI CB Longs.  The CB Longs require a close range head shot to be effective on something the size of a woodchuck, so it took some time to get the opportunities I needed.  I would have preferred full-power ammo but the neighbors probably would have freaked out.   The CB Longs are very quiet; just a loud snap.

 

Over the course of the summer, I got one big adult and two younger ones about 2/3 grown.  None sighted on the property since then...

 

What did you bait the woodchucks with?

Usually I slice some apples and toss them in there. Cantaloupe and pears are some other good baits, anything from the produce aisle should work. Patience is the best “bait” when it comes to a groundhog

Right along concrete is a good place to set on them, nice work!

Ha! Yeah we have a massive collection of destroyed traps. Some are better than others, we use tomahawk and safeguard and they seem to hold up well for several years. The ones you get at Home Depot or tractor supply usually get torn up badly after the second or third raccoon. Tomahawk came out with a new trap a few years back with thicker metal so we got a dozen of them. Doggone if the doors weren’t too short, raccoons have escaped out of all of them

Yeah, that sucks.

I just got my first groundhog of the season but I didn't trap him.

 

I "poisoned" him with a 21gr. H&N Barracuda .22 pellet out of my Weirauch HW90... 15-yard shot out the bathroom window.  He stood up when he heard me easing open the screen.   ?

No, but I think the fox that frequents my yard may have brought him home to her kits.  Either that, or the crows were really working at their full potential today... the groundhog carcass is gone.

 

I've never tried eating one but most vegetarian animals are good table fare, right?

From what I’ve been told, it’s alright if you cook it on a flame. Don’t make stew out of them, too greasy

I’ve ate several of them and the thing about the groundhog is that he is tough. Even one half grown. I always cooked them for a long time. The old recipe here in these parts was to cook and then bake. I never thought of mr whistle pig being greasy, like raccoons are. And neither are good table fare, more the fun and novelty of the idea of it.
