I've heard a lot of reasons why spinnerbaits work, but one of the most reasonable is that they mimic a small pod of baitfish. The blades are supposed to mimic the flash off the side of the forage fish. If that is true, then why have I seen no spinnerbaits with true silver plate, like the Mepps spinner blades have? Seems like the flashier silver would be just the ticket, but evidently it's not??????   Silver spoons (Johnson Silver Minnow) and in-lines (Mepps, Worden's and others) have great success and have been accepted lures for many years.

   Why not spinnerbait blades?

I have almost exclusively all silver blade spinnerbaits. In fact I only use one with a gold blade. Granted some of them used to be gold blade and I replaced them with some silver ones purchased from Jann's Netcraft.

   Silver or nickle/chrome?  I'm asking about genuine silver plate, such as on Mepps blades. Its reflection is "whiter" and visible much further deeper in the water.    jj

I too prefer the silver over gold and always change out any gold blades. Also I prefer Willow blades over Colorado blades. May be a Florida thing....

I'm surprised that more manufacturers don't offer a true silver blade.

Silver blades do produce a more white flash.

For some reason nickle blades are the norm.

I believe the blades on a rooster tail is also a silver finish. It has a nice flash to it, like the Mepps.

Ah I getcha......no I don't believe I've ever seen those. You're talking about that not-so-glossy silver? I have a couple Mepps and Vibrax inline spinners with those, and you're right, I don't recall seeing those as blades on a spinnerbait. I wonder if you could get some steel wool and rough up the shiny finish to be nearly there?

   Not really the aim. No matter which nickle or chrome finish, drop it in clear or very slightly stained water, about 4 or 5 feet down. Drop a Mepps silver blade next to it. The chrome will actually be dark, and the silver will be brighter and kinda white.  If your aim is vibration, then the reflectivity is of no consequence. But if reflectivity is what you want, I would think (which is why I'm asking) that the silver would be better.

   But looking at the market, maybe not?             jj

   So now I know they're available. I guess I should have dug deeper. Now the question is this: have you or anyone you know used silver plated blades on a spinnerbait?   If you did, what kind of luck did you have? 

 

   I suppose I'd like to try some this year, but I don't know whether to try Colorado, Indiana or willow types, and I'm undecided on singles or tandems.  If the theory about the blades mimicking a pod of forage fish is true, I'd think that tandem Colorado blades would probably be best. 

   What do you guys think?       jj

Not only do the blades create flash they also create vibrations and different blades have different sound

Ive used those blades for years now both gold and silver and have caught many fish with them. Are they better than the ' cheaper less shiny' ones I can't say.

A-Jay put added some Mepps blades to spinnerbaits . Dont know if he had any luck with them .

silver is way more popular than nickle for salmon.  Problem with silver is it tarnishes easily.  Has more flash when bran new, but you need to polish it after awhile to keep the silver shining.  Nickle keeps its shine longer.  I believe I catch as many fish of all species with nickle as I do with silver.  I do prefer gold plate over polished brass and don't mind paying the extra dollars for gold.

   I did that myself, but the Mepps french blade turns a heck of a lot different than Colorado, and even quite a bit different than Indiana blades. I gave that idea up pretty quick.       jj
