A day I won’t soon forget

The water has been warming, the sun was high, and a slight chop, so the expectation for a good smallmouth bite was high. We launched around nine after picking up my son’s friend. We were at the dock giving the Yamaha a little time to ‘warm up’. We were casting and I managed a 2.5-3 lb largemouth, great sign!

We launch and head straight for the pot hole on the lake and began to fish. I kept throwing the blades jig I caught the largemouth on. About 10 casts in I get a pro backlash and snap goes my line and there goes my jig with about 30 feet of line. I start throwing a KVD deep diving jerkbait, first cast I get it back to the boat and there’s line on one of the hooks. “There’s no way I say”! I kid you not, it’s my line with my blades jig! I go back to fishing when I get a good strike. I bring the fish to the boat, only to see it’s a snot rocket. He hit the front treble hook, as I lift him in the boat I grab him and he slips out of my hand the line breaks, and in he goes with my jerkbait! I look down and the pike had a hook in his mouth and one in his tail so there he is floating! I grab the net and get him along with my jerkbait! Unbelievable right? It doesn’t stop there. I keep fishing the jerkbait, and I felt tension on my line and give it a good pop and SNAP! My pole snapped in half! Still under warranty so I deal with that.

Still not done! We keep fishing and the only other fish was a rock bass I caught. We decided to load the boat and head to our lake. As we’re coming up to the launch my son is at the bow and grabs the dock, well he wasn’t paying attention and the head on the trolling motor hit a post on the dock and basically exploded! Thankfully the trolling motor still works and I’ll hunt for a new head.

We fished our lake for a couple hours, they caught a few pan fish and three bass. So it was an interesting day, EXPENSIVE day, but we caught fish, and the boys had fun.

These days occur once in a great while but are surely a bummer when they do.  Better days are ahead, right?  ?

After the dust settled all I could do was laugh.
