Good but reasonably priced polarized glasses?

Featured Replies

oakley straight link or splitshots definetaly worth it

A few years back, when I had a job where I was constantly on the road, I forgot to bring my sunglasses. I stopped at a rest stop and there was a sunglasses stand where they had UV3 and iDrive glasses. I have been wearing these glasses ever since. They run $89.99 now, but they’re worth it. The problem is that they have a limited selection for different styles. And they change all the styles every few years. Sometimes you can get about $20 off and if you buy a pair, you’ll get a coupon for anything in the future. The amber iDrive glasses are great all around. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, but I’ve been wearing them almost 10 years now.

Strike King S11 glasses are great for the money. I like dark lens when the sun is bright and amber for low light conditions.  Think I got 3 pair on sale for like $60? Are they as good as they $200 costa glasses I lost no but not to far off.

If you are a Costco member they have good prices on several brands.

I broke down and bought a pair of Costas while they were on sale for 30% off (about $135). I had been using $25 to $50 glasses over the past several years and got tired of having to shop for a new pair when the lens coating started coming off. With the new glasses, I can see much better, and my eyes aren't as bloodshot and tired when I come off the water after a long day. I haven't had them long enough to comment on lens durability.

I did this for years too.  I would buy a set of $25 frames every other year for about a decade.  I actually bought the same pair every time too.  The outer coating of the frame starts to peel away around the nose after a while so I'd simply just by another one.  I did this 4 times which which totals out to 100 bucks.  Well I finally decided to buy a quality set of Costas and Santa (aka my wife) brought me some last Christmas.  Several online retailers sell Costas for right around 100 bucks with the 580P lens which is about half off MSRP.  I have used them since around the end of April this year and I can easily see the quality difference compared to the $25 cheapies I always used before.  The 580G (glass lens) is available for about $150 too and even that's significantly lower that normal price.

I’ve owned two pairs of sunglasses the last 15 years. Both Costas. The first pair were still fine 10 years in but got lost in a buddy’s car wreck after I left them in his car. The second pair is on year 7 or 8 and are still pristine.

I think I paid $300 for both so that comes out to $20/year and decreasing. The only time I wear anything else is at the beach I’ll put on a $5 pair to go in ocean

I actually got a pair of both. I got the glass, and they were a little heavy. So, I ordered a pair of polycarbonate. I find myself wearing the 580P more because they are lighter, but I kept the glass pair in case the polycarbontes get scratched up. Some people seem to think there's a big difference in clarity between the two, but I can't tell much difference. There's probably a difference in durability.

Solarbat, hands down

Ive tried the SK glasses and wasnt impressed after having worn Solarbats.

I use brown for driving, mossback for fishing, and soft green for fishing overcast days.

Yeah, the styles arent the greatest but I believe these offer the best lenses at the price point.

Last week I dropped my Costa 580G glasses in a river and they sunk and were swept away before I could grab them. I cried. I just ordered a pair of Solar Bat Floating Bat 1 glasses, should have them by next week.

I used to buy the sk but scratching and peeling was bad. a few years ago I tried suncloud glasses and am real happy with them. About $50.

Update since everyone provided such good feedback on my question. While kicking all this around I ran across on YouTube an ad for Shady Rays glasses. As much as I would usually be hesitant to buy something from a YouTube ad, when I looked at them they seemed to be a decent product.

With a "first time customer" discount my pair came to $38 including shipping. I got the basic polarized black/smoke lens wraparound style. They offer free replacement for any loss or damage. Also came with a nice microfiber bag that doubles as a cleaning cloth.

They arrived today. Though the ultimate test will be out on the lake in the heat and sweat, my first impression is that they are at least as good as any of the other glasses I looked at in the $40 range (or a little higher, like $60 Columbias). They fit well, feel solid and definitely cut through glare. I'll be anxious to try them out on the water, but for first impressions I'm fairly impressed for the price.

More update: Haven't worn the Shady Rays fishing yet, but wore them on my drive home from work this afternoon, in bright sunshine. Take it with a grain of salt because I've only ever owned cheapie sunglasses, but...these seem to be a much better product than the cheapies I've owned in the past. They feel really solid on, but what really impressed me was the clarity. They seemed extremely clear for what I'd expect for a $40 pair of sunglasses. Can't wait to get them out on the water now.

After I read this thread, I advised my wife to consider a pair of shady rays.  They arrived yesterday.  She bought two of them because there is a deal for 50% of two pairs right now.  I can say that they are easily the best pair of shades I've seen for 24 bucks.  Free shipping, replacement warranty (twice), and a nylon case included.  For anyone that doesn't want to pay for costas, these are a very nice alternative.

I'm glad they worked out for you as well. I have been really impressed with mine.

I'll add since my last post, I also had the opportunity to test out their free replacement policy for damage or loss. The first time I wore them to go fishing, I had put them on the bill of my cap because it was 5:30 a.m. and not sunny yet. I was walking down a trail through the woods to my fishing spot, and being early morning the trail had tons of spider webs across it. I finally reached the point of frustration and took of my cap and swatted away a bunch of webs, forgetting that sunglasses were up there ? Apparently they got slung far into the woods because I could not find them.

I'm happy to report the Shady Rays replacement procedure was super easy. You get up to two replacement claims. Just $8.95 for processing and shipping. My replacement pair arrived via First Class Mail pretty promptly. Back to happily wearing them again.

N/M. I see I already answered this thread.

I wear glasses, so I need a pair that will fit over them.  I settled on Cocoons.  They run between $50-$60.  They're cheap enough that I have three pairs.  Gray/Smoke, Amber and Yellow.  Just pick the pair that's appropriate for the weather conditions, though I've found that the Amber lens is the best all around color.

The $50 Huk glasses in mirror blue behind the counter at Academy are head and shoulders above the $25/$35 ones in the racks. I’m surprised they aren’t more expensive.

I got new amber (green mirror) sunglasses a few weeks ago.  I do like them at dwan and dusk.  But mid-day, I miss my gray.  I am not thrilled about it, but I may start carrying both in the yak.

^^^grey lens. Love mine

That's exactly the pair I got. This weekend was my first full weekend of fishing with them. We went hard, 5+ hours both morning and evening for 3 days straight, in hot bluebird sky days. The Shady Rays were great. That's easily the best $35 I have spent on sunglasses.
