Keitech question

Featured Replies

Most of my Keitech fishing has been with a weighted head with exposed hook but i was looking at other options since I moved away from St Clair. Are many of you fishing it with a bullet weight that can freely slide on the line with a hook that you can bury into the bait? If not what are good weedless approaches?

The last time I followed this website closely it cost me thousands of dollars keeping up with Jones's tackle. Don't get me started again!

Thanks. I have been hunting for something like this for awhile.  I was able to pick up the last two at Cabela's today.  They were wiped clean of just about everything.

A weedless rig I use with a 4.8" Keitech is a keel-weighted hook:

Gamakatsu Superline Spring-Lock Hook – 1/4 oz x 5/0

What size hook is recommended for a 3.8" Keitech? I'm thinking 1/4 or 3/16oz for the weight. I wouldn't be fishing that deep.

I only throw 4.8" & 5.8" Keitechs, but the 1/8 oz Gama Spring-lock is available in 3/0 and 4/0.

I use a 3/0 Trokar, because I only carry 3/0 and 5/0 swimbait hooks.  I think 4/0 would probably be perfect.  I get bumped without hooking up more with keel weighted hooks than I do with swimbait jigs, but it probably has to do with the fish's commitment, at least that's what I hypothesize.  I use the BPS hook weights, so the weight can be almost whatever you want.  Whenever I'm using these, it's usually pretty shallow, so there'll be less than 1/4 oz.  If you use the hook weights, you need strong pliers to crimp them on.  I ruined a Leatherman trying.

One way to present a keitech differently than most people do is to throw it on a swinging football head. Works especially well around rocks but as long as there is something to bang the head off of it will work well, caught some great fish this way.

Interesting.  I couldn't connect on them last week using a flashy swimmer popping off larger rocks.  Twice I lost a keitech and didn't touch the fish.  I'll back in that spot tomorrow and will switch it up.

Owner Weighted Twistlock 4/0 3/16oz fit the 3.8 perfect in my experience.

Flashy Swimmers and great too, but I don't always want the blade.

I agree i have underspins for the bladed options. I was definitely looking at the Owner now to see if i can find it locally.

Keel weighted hooks are my go to in the weeds.

What type of rod and line are you using throwing in the weeds?

4/0 weighted Beast for the 4.8. 4/0 weighted regular Owner for the 3.8 I think.

Owner Ultrahead has always worked well for me

It helps your psyche if you decide now that all missed soft swimbait bites, especially those with lost tails or baits, were blue gill or pike, or some other non-bass fish.  No way to verify, but it relieves me a a lot of angst and grief over missed fish

I love that head.

They make a killer swim jig, an underspin & a spinnerbait too.

Extremely Beefed Up.

Really depends on the weeds and the size of the bait I throw. I'll throw a 3.3" and even a 3.8" on a Medium power if it allows. MH is the do all though. H is nice in really heavy weeds, but casting distance and accuracy suffers.

That's even better than the bass just wouldn't commit.
