Featured Replies

i see KVD has a lews baitcaster just out, curious if anyone knows more about it, does it have magnetic or centrifical cast control.

Lew's YouTube channel just put out a video on the new KVD line. I watched it yesterday, I'm 95% certain they said it had both centrifugal and magnetic brakes.

Anybody have one of these? Perhaps on a St Croix Mojo Bass? They could look really nice if the colors jive but I'm afraid it could be red vs purple and not match at all.

Fish don't care what color your rigs are.

And I don't care what the fish or other people think.

I like to match my socks and underwear with my worm weights.

re-branded Scorpion...

Shimano doesn't rebrand.

Seems like a step backwards in reel design. Must have been existing tooling.

Just a little lipstick

*Here I am thinking that matching socks and under wear to my tungsten worm weights colors  was just a Southern thing ? Glad to know our Northern bass'n brothers are in on the fun as well (lol !!)

P.S. My T-Rig fishing confidence grew once I added the matching Green Pumpkin , Watermelon Red and Junebug socks and under wear ... *Don't be afraid to mix the colors up you wear  as well - just like jig and trailer color combinations  !!

Never wear underwear until water temps go below 60! It’ll increase your perceived sensitivity of utilizing the Alabama shake and detecting bites. FYI

I know this is an old thread, and not sure why it became a shimano discussion, but I do have a point to make about this reel and this Lew's casting brake.

The KVD has the same casting brake that's on Custom Inshore, and is my least favorite of the four LFS and SLP Lew's that I fish.  That brake has two metal plates on the spool, and is the heaviest spool (read highest inertia) of any Lew's makes.

Over this, I'll take the mag brake on a Super Duty G (absolutely clean spool with no added hardware), or the lightweight centrifugal brake on Lew's Pro models (below) any day.

(yes, I dusted this after I saw the macro)

I'm an engineer, and have done the math.  I also cast NLW Abu CT surf reels out to 100 yds, which have no end tension, separate centrifugal and mag brakes.

Mag brakes are best for defending wind backlash and long casts.  Centrifugal brakes are best for defending initial spool overshoot backlash.  Low inertia spool defends all 3 types of backlash.

When engineers get a hold of something simple like fishing ............

engineer is a life attitude - if you have it, you apply it to everything.

If the information on backlash is useful to you, use it.

You don't want to get me started on modulus and fly rod tapers.

You're probably right, but if you want to mosey on over to the backreel thread...

You mean I've been fishing a purple reel on a hot pink rod all this time for nothing? Dang, I wish someone told me sooner

Just make sure your lipstick and nail polish complement your rod and reel - that's the ticket.

I'm not sure if I got the nailpolish right, but my fishnets definitely did.

It takes a real man to drive a pink Cadillac.

But if you don't want to choose, you can pick one of the Japanese X-braids that changes color every 10 m
