I wonder if #14 sufix advance mono is too heavy for the kvd 1.5s? Any advice what size or kind of mono you like for squarebills?

I fish them on anything from 10-20 and I believe I've heard KVD himself mention fishing them as high as 25 in heavy cover or to make them run shallower.

   I used 14 lb. Advance for a while. I thought it was excellent for some things, but sensitivity wasn't one of them. I use squarebills on riprap, and instead of burning them, I run them quite slow. I depend on that "tick ......tick" to tell me what the lure is doing. I wasn't getting that feedback with Advance that I wanted ..... or at least not to the degree that I wanted. I had been using Seaguar InvizX, and that gave me better results.

   Where are you using your squarebills, in other words in what kind of environment? How fast is your retrieve? If I run squarebills (KVD or any others) at higher speeds, then that's a whole different ball game. Of course, that's suicide on riprap. You either hang up or your lure comes back with no bill.

   If you run squarebills in more open waters, and especially at higher speeds, then 14 lb. line is fine, whether it's Advance or something else. If you're running an obstacle course the way I am, and you depend on feedback from the lure, then all I can tell you is that I prefer fluorocarbon. Different horses for different courses.

   BTW ..... running on riprap the way I do, I have better luck with the 2.5s than the 1.5s. YMMV.

Sunline Defier Armilo #11

I use 20 lb Sufix 832 with a short 10 lb mono leader.

And no, the braid does not dig on the reel causing snap offs and other issues, and yes I have caught big bass.

I use 15# Invisx, so I'm sure what you have will work fine.

I have 2 different rods that I will use for squarebills. Open water over rocks or grass I am throwing 12# Invisx, around cover such as wood I am throwing 15# Tatsu.

Not a big fan of Sufix Advance but I do like Elite for mono.

 

For squarebills and crankbaits though, I like Sunline Defier 13lb.

Most Square Bill 1.5's get between #12 lb. to #15 lb. FC , Co-Poly or Mono .

12lb usually when using mono.

15 lb Big Game.

Not too heavy, I use 16# test Sunline Sniper

When I throw them which isn’t too often,  I use #14 Sniper

I've got a couple different squarebill combos and on one is either 12 or 15lb Big Game which has done well for me over the years, open water or rock/wood.

 

I decided to try Yozuri Hybrid 10lb after several recommendations from here and I have it on one of my setups. I've only fished it a few times so no real conclusion yet but so far it seems like it will work.

10 to 16 lb floro.  I have thrown them on 8lb yzh on spinning tackle.   No problems there.  I have 14 lb spooled up now on my judge rod.

I'm running these things in open river current. Anywhere from 1-6ft. Just rocks and boulders on the susquehanna. I believe that the 12lb fluorocarbon was a culprit for getting these lures stuck easier. And by burn i mean 7.1:1 or higher gear ratio

   Yeah ..... totally different than the way I use them. It looks like 14# Advance might be the right answer for you.
