Skirted grub(hula grub)

Featured Replies

Anyone have much luck fishing these with a texas rig for largies? Most I see in videos are jig heads. I fish muck bottom ponds just looking for something different to throw at them.

Yes and you can fish them weedless that way.

I've gotten a lot of mileage fishing these on a Title Shot jig:

OP,  Why would you ever fish any bait with a buried hook point if the cover didn't demand it?...

oe

maybe try a large worm hook or jig head with a weed guard instead of burying the hook. a Chompers Rock Walker jig or a Yamamoto Football Head jig both come with weed guards. ?

In mid-summer I've had success fishing/yoyo-ing green pumpkin or watermelon chompers through brush and channel swing standing timber. Bluegill start picking bugs and what not out of timber and bass will suspend in the branches. The bulk and movement of the chomper does a good job of imitating panfish in those situations- I'm sure light weight texas rigging can accomplish some of the same panfish-y movements in other "less traditional" hula grub applications.

It doesn't have drag drag bottom to be successful- those things have gobs of action while slowly falling.

Yes, I fish Texas rig hula grub through weed. The only thing I don’t like when bluegill nib the tail out which happen very often.

I have never used them for largemouths that I can remember but there is no reason why they would not work well . I have slaughtered river smallmouths T-rigging them .

Barely missed winning a tournament several years ago with a T-rigged pumpkin 5" Chompers. 1/4oz bullet weight with a 3/0 EWG. They wouldn't hardly touch it on a jighead but were chewing it T rigged, no idea why.
