Alberto knot- how many wraps?

Featured Replies

How many wraps do you guys use when attaching 10lb power pro to 8-10lb mono/fluoro leader? I’ve always used 7 up and 7 down on 15-50lb braid with no issues.

7 up and down.

7 up and 7 down, regardless of braid or leader weight.  Knock on wood but I have never had a failure.

6 to 7 for heavy braid. 8 or 9 for light braid.

7 up and 3 down has never failed me.

Well apparently I'm doing it wrong since I'm the only one who does less than 7. I've only had it pull through one time and that was years ago when I was first learning it.

10 up and I lose count down. It comes loose sometimes but I suspect I clip the tags end way to close.

7 up and 7 back, and one or two overhand knots with the braid tag then clip.

You are not. 4 will hold if tied properly. The knot was used out west for tuna fishing with 4 wraps long before becoming crazy...

6-8 each way for me.  Any more and I'm not using a leader.

Exactly this. I just seat the knot harder on heaver lines.

My favorite video regarding the Alberto:

When I first learned the knot, I saw 5 up 5 down as the recommended wraps. However, Alberto Knie, who invented the knot over 25 years ago has a video out where he ties with 7 up 7 down, so that is probably why 7 and 7 is so popular. It's what I use the most when tying, though lately I've been playing with the Shin knot ("lazy Alberto"), a somewhat similar knot, with good success. FG is about the only other connecting knot I tie regularly. Just depends on what lines I'm connecting and for what species.

Is this the knot also referred to as the Crazy Alberto, and RP knot?

KNOT!

My wraps have varied, but typical is 7 + 7, thinner diameter leader,

perhaps a few more wraps. Thicker, less.

But I've also been a big fan of Shin Fukae's variant, as mentioned by

@Team9nine...

The PR uses a bobbin and it is the best knot but labor intensive at first
