What is a good rod power and action?

Featured Replies

For Bass what is a good action and power I’m looking ahead because once I catch bass I want a baitcaster what have you had best luck with?

Also what’s a good length 6.6 or 7

Depends on what you want to do - Medium-Heavy/Fast is the 'Swiss Army knife' of rods...does quite a few things well.

That's a personal preference really - myself at 6'1", I prefer 7' rods...which is what all my canoe rods are.

grab a 7' medium heavy rod and you can use it for almost anything. jigs, texas rigs, worms, chatterbaits, smaller swimbaits, etc

Is the Abu Garcia Black Max good?

Rod actions and lengths are dependent on what you want to do.

All-purpose? Above mentions are all-around. 6'6" MH is probably

most common, with 7 footers thrown in over the past many years

as "standard".

I personally do not like rods longer than 6'6" for bass, I'll go longer

for saltwater, though. To each his/her own.

I've not used Abu, but one of my sons bought a Lews combo

at Dick's Sporting Goods, and he's enjoyed it thoroughly.

It's an all-around combo mentioned above. Baitcasting, that is.

It's an alright reel for the price - though it seems that it's been discontinued and replaced with the Max-X.

The lure(s) you are fishing, and where you are fishing them will dictate what line and rod will be suited to the task, so there is no one action, power, or length, that is better, the only way to find out is to go fishing with what rod you have, and then ask yourself (like Goldilocks)  is this rod just right, or do I wish it was a bit (or a lot) more or less [fill in the blank].

The two Choices for the black max is either 6.6 moderate fast medium or 7 foot medium heavy fast which do you recommend?

Will a seven footer work well for bank fishing or if it was your preference would you rather go with 6.6

A 7' MH/F rod will cover a broad spectrum bass baits and cover.  Spool up with 12-15# fluoro or 50# braid and you're good.

Reel, heck  yes, rod, not so much.

Lure and presentation dependent, but if you are looking to resolve the 80/20 rule with a choice as others have said it'd be a MH/F rod with a length from 7'-8'.  I personally like them on the long end of the spectrum and settled on 7'10" as they are short enough to still fit in 8' rod lockers, but long enough to give you the advantages of a longer stick.

If you pond fishing, go with 6'6" if you are on big lake open area go with 7', M power in some brands and MH in some brands, Depending on your brand because power is not really standard in every line of rod.

?!

I don't understand.

Like many others have said, a Med or a Med-Heavy are good if you only need one rod. I like 7' for rods, but it's ultimately your choice.

I am emphatically agreeing with you. I like to say "A Med rod that fishes like a MH,  or a MH that fishes more like a Med"

Don't make me post pixs of striped bass... :)

Welcome to bass fishing.

Abu Black Max rod-reel combo has been a popular entry level  combo and still available at BPS for $80 if you are budget limited. Abu Max X combo is $100 at Dicks.

I suggest using Berkley Big Game 12# mono line to learn to cast and bass fish with.

6’6”rod MF  and 6.3:1 casting reels were the standard for decades, now it’s 7’ MF rods.

Personally not a fan of today’s Abu products preferring Daiwa.

Good luck, watch Glenn’s video’s on learning to use a bait caster etc, etc.

The Black Max reel is very good especially for ~50, but I immediately switched the rod for a 6'6 Fenwick Eagle, so IDK about the rod at all.

All good suggestions. Wally World has the Black Max Combo for $59, no brainer. I would recommend that, and save up $50 or so and get an Aird-X, if you end up liking BCs.

The black max reel is pretty alright , but for the 7'MH there are better rods for the same price. At WalMart you can pick up a Lews Hank Parker for 39$ . They're lighter and a little bit more sensitive.
