Recently I bought an Avid casting rod, and the locking nut is bringing me a lot discomfort. Because of the way I palm the reel, my index finger and middle finger are in direct contact of the threads of the locking nut, which is very uncomfortable. I am sure some of you guys have the same experience. Is there any modification available for this problem? thanks!

 The way I hold it achieves best rod reel balance on most of my combos, so I don’t really want to change....

Rubberized tape or Plastidip/liquid electrical tape.  Maybe some silicone glue or goop.  Lots of options here.  As long as you don't get it on the cork, it ought to be non-permanent.  But, of course, non-permanent options mean you'll likely have to reapply it.  Otherwise, you're looking at sanding it smooth.  

 

On the extreme, you could take it to a rod builder and have them redo the reel seat to one you like.  They might have to redo the grips too.  

What do the reel seats on your other rods look like? If they are more comfortable I would say just return this rod and get another from that manufacturer. 

 

I have an older Shimano Clarus that has an uplocking real seat. You could try find something like that or maybe try another rod that has the locking nut under the cork.

Do not put any kind of glue directly on the threads or locking nut.  If the threads are damaged its just going to cause a bigger headache.

Covering the area with a tape like Winn's wraps, tennis grip tape, should fix the problem without introducing other problems.  It will be temporary if it doesn't work for you, then you can try something else.  Another possibility, if you can find a piece thin enough, is to wrap the area with the soft polyurethane foam that electronics often come packaged in.  

I vote just the sports or Wynn tape. Put some Saran Wrap over the threads first so you don’t get any tape residue on the threads.

Second that suggestion.  Never seen someone hold a reel that way but I am sure that the OP is not the only one. 

 

You could also use blue painters tape.

I know. I didn’t use to hold it like that. I used to have my middle finger on the trigger, but then I found out that holding it with my pinky on the trigger feels less tip heavy lol some combos balance exactly at that point. How do hold yours?
