i fish a lake called blue marsh. all the creeks are all no wake zones. i think either boaters dont know what that is or just dont care. i guess 5mph isnt their thing. this is just a venting post. i swear this is true. had a guy yell "what.... is this too fast for you" then preceded to do donuts cuz i was staring at him going at least 15 mph. i just laughed it off hoping someone with authority would see.

I steer clear of that place.  Drunks with boats and jet ski’s don’t fair well with me and enough ignorance to make we want to go postal.

A 4' wake jars your freaking teeth loose. I swear I thought my boat would fold up.

As a kayak angler I will take a person staying on plane near me most of the time unless it is some deep V or another style that pushes a large wake.

We have a lot of jet boats that run the rivers I fish and most of them need to stay on the throttle to keep through the shallow spots anyways so it works out well.

Do not buy fishing gear without a license ?   Really ?

I humor them. What a dull job.

I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that a single person in a FISHING boat with FISHING gear is probably FISHING.

I wish they did a lot more patrolling and enforcing of wildlife laws here.

I always try and respect no wake zones, but recently did a dumb thing. My Bro-in-law and I fished on a lake in another state they we have never been to. Pulled up to the ramp and there was a tournament going on and a couple dozen boats launching. First, we needed to pay a launch fee (Wisconsin) so we had to borrow a pen from the tourney folks. Then we had to ask them for some singles as all we had was a 20. At this point, the guys says, "I don't know about you guys from Illinois."  It was said in fun I think.  Then it was our turn to launch so we putted out on the lake and watched all the tourney guys just stroll off trolling. Thought the fishing must be good right around the launch. I hit the throttle and was up on plane for about 5 minutes until we were across the lake.  Noticed none of those guys went anywhere.  Come to find out there is absolutely no wake before 0900. Here I am making enough noise to wake up the entire community.  I am sure those tourney guys were just shaking their heads.

I have been on a couple small lakes here that claim to have that rule too.  As it turns out, I did some investigating and it was a rule that the lake association came up with, and not a law that the enforcement agency produced (or enforced).  It is not posted or written anywhere.  The very next time I came out of the launch, I throttled up on plane at 7am.

These lakes are loaded with wake boats, jet skis, and other recreational traffic in the evenings that continue to cruise around past sunset, which is highly illegal according to state law.  But the lake association says I can't jump on plane with my bass boat before 9am?  Not a chance I'm following that made up fake rule.  As it turns out, the lake association board is entirely made of residents on the lake that use the lake solely for recreational purposes too.

In your case, it sounds like it was actually a law but the premise of it comes from the same point I just made.  They don't want recreational boats making wakes before 9am so they just ban all forms of wakes.  Unfortunately, it affects anglers the most because that is when we prefer to fish to AVOID recreational boats.

I'm learning a heck of a lot every time I go out. I learned if I see a wake boat get out or into a cove fast.

I didn't even know they existed until this week. Also ballast tanks I don't understand?????

They draw water into ballast tanks in order to make the boat heavier. Heavier boat makes bigger waves for surfing.

The autocorrect PC leprechaun modified my three letter response.

Yeah I know how to spot them now real fast now.

But I know my boat can survive a 4 foot drop. My back...not so much ?

I'm not going anywhere near a wake boat EVER AGAIN. Three 4 foot drops wrecked me. My bad disks are swelled up pinching my leg nerves.  It ain't fun at all.

It was close and a narrow river close to shore, I didn't even have the outboard running on two of them.I couldn't ride it out and don't have the skill. 90% of my weight is aft of center. If anyone sees a video on it or a boat course on it please forward. 17' bass/crappie boat.

I got a feeling I was going to get smacked hard anyway.

Leaving a no wake zone

Semi off topic question . How do to ride out or over a 4 foot wake in a river with a flat bottom boat

It hurts me and my boat.

Evidently manufacturers are building big wake producing trailered boats now.

I'll never buy another one but I'm currently fishing out of a flat bottom boat. I learned my lesson and just stay off of water where there are large fast boats and that includes bass boats. It's like they're trying to sink me.

There's more than one reason that I love my shallow rocky river. They have to make it through the rocks to get me. LOL

They typically have to see you psychically cast/troll or hold a rod before they can write a no fishing license ticket. But if they ask before you cast, no harm no foul I suppose if you show it to them. Also if you are alone in a boat full of rods, they have probable cause haha

The last time I was checked for a license was at a local pond. My wife was helping the granddaughters catch little bluegills and my son and I were back a ways watching and talking. Neither of us were anywhere near fishing tackle. The DNR officer asked to see our license without ever even addressing my wife who was the only adult fishing.

The only other recent check was in the dead of winter. There was very little open water on the river. It was cold, windy and there was so much snow that I barely made it into the access site. I just had the urge to do some casting...practice skipping or whatever. It was so cold that after a few casts I had to chip the ice out of my guides and every few minutes I had to get in the truck to thaw my hands out. A DNR officer pulled up and asked to see my license.

In both cases I had my license, presented it and there was no real issue but I really don't understand why they checked me in the first place.

I was out this morning and around 9am one came by way too close and created a tsunami that I saw coming, thankfully.  I turned the bow into it and cranked up the power on the minn Kota and said to my Father "incoming" and he turned right in time to see it and said "whoa."  Its safe to say had we not seen it coming I would have taken a big wave right over the side of the boat.  I hate those things with a passion.

Wasn't Tonka by chance, was it?

I think sometimes the wakeboats purposefully buzz the smaller boats. I know there's been times when half the bay is available, and they pass close to me in the canoe for some reason.

Morons.

Well big boat moron season will be over soon.

When I get my TM pedal back I'm off to the Potomac. (You have to go under a 6 foot arch to the river).

Just small boats and jet skis. Jet skis don't bother me anymore. I'm heavier and bigger with full insurance  ?

It isn’t any fun to just wakeboard out in the middle of nowhere, they have to show off in front of all the other boats. Same with jetski

It wasn’t Tonka. It was another smaller yet popular metro lake. Fishing was tough, only caught 5 bass and 2 pike. These sunny flat warm days have not been kind to me this season.

After those massive waves went through, my Father said “Geez, imagine if we were in a smaller boat, a canoe, or a kayak…”

If I fill our surf boat up with ballast and lean it to one side you better turn away from the wave otherwise you get a few hundred gallons in the boat.  If you are close to a shallower hulled boat it is even worse.  Driving etiquette is required when troughing water like that.

Morons is an understatement.  I was surfing with a 6 year old between my legs and another boat not even pulling someone almost ran us over.  Not sure how they can get that close to another boat and not notice in particular when someone is riding behind it at a whopping 11mph.  The amount of times I see dipshit manuvers on Tonka is insane.

I wouldn’t say “required.” I’ve never seen anyone wake surfing any distance from anyone, they only do it where they can be seen. And let me tell you, it’s beyond popular around here. They surf all winter long, and summer weekends are just comical

Ok, should be required.  The dumb * that do it here are insane.  Highest volume Malibu dealer in the country is 3mi from my house.  I am totally fine with people doing it, but when 99.9% are idiots it is hard to swallow.

Ya - and they got rid of a baitshop/outboard repair place to put that 'eyesore' in that spot.

The wake boats that got me were all going slow and maybe 40 feet from shore at best.

I never saw one until last week and the first hit beached me. After the intail drop( I was anchored on that one).

I now know why people have told me to stay off the Chesapeake. Stay in the feeder rivers upstream. Barges on the bay give off massive wakes that shake 40 footers(and you loose your lunch).

95% of people in my home waters abide by the no wake/5mph going through channels leading from the bay to Lake Ontario. I was out on a jet ski last weekend going through a channel when a big lake fishing boat came up behind me and passed me in that half on plane "plowing water" speed that just totally swamped out the channel and everyone else in it. He may as well have just gone 30 through there as his wake would have been half that of what he was doing.

At the end of the day, in my opinion, there's not much you can do about it.  If by chance a sheriffs boat or maybe coast guard witnesses it, "maybe" they'll stop them and "maybe" they'll get a ticket, but I've never seen it or heard of it happening around here.
