Gary Yamamoto Baits Sold to GSM

Featured Replies

It is very interesting to see them make the first splash into the fishing industry.  They are like the Pure Fishing of the hunting world.

I'm guessing this is all part of Gary's retirement plan.  Good for him.

I believe GSM was acquired by Gridiron Capital last year so this is probably the first step in a larger, strategic move.  Probably a good thing for Senko customers going forward.

Only time will tell, I suppose.

True enough, but having access to a deep-pocket parent (and parent's parent) firm will make funding R&D/new product projects a bit easier.

Hopefully it works out well for everyone.

I haven't inquired yet as to the ramifications.  I’ll keep everyone posted.  It’s been a crazy year for buyouts.  Mustad buys Live Target, TH Marine buys Gator Guards, then gets bought themselves, Lews buys Quantum/Zebco then gets bought themselves as well.  There’s a LOT of movement right now.  Crazy.

I didn’t know Lews got bought out, but I live under a rock. Who bought Lews ?

Is this a big deal? Will we see bait quality degrade?

Personally I'd like to see quality degrade I'd it means the price tag goes down with it, 8$ for a bag of plastic is redicilous, I'd rather just put it towards a s waver or something that will last a long time and make memorable memories, and miserable ones as well

Is this news related to the prior BDT Capital Partners investment or is this a net new thing?

It’s not just Lews, it’s Strike King as well from the article I just read.

That info is a couple of years old.

I went back and looked, you’re right. Hmm. Interesting. Not a shocker to anyone but me. I did say I live under a rock.

Well hopefully the corporate bean counters won't try to mess with the success that got Yamamoto baits to where it is at. Change suppliers to a cheaper brand to save a couple of cents per package or some such crap. Smaller piece counts in the package for the same price. Etc. etc. etc.

Not exactly easy to keep up with all that stuff.

Rather Outdoors Report

Rather Outdoors has announced that it has acquired Zebco Brands (“Zebco”), the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based manufacturer of fishing rods, reels and accessories. Quantum rods and reels were included in the sale.

Zebco is a preeminent marketer of fishing tackle and outdoor gear.  Operational since 1949, it is now one of the oldest companies in the Rather Outdoors portfolio of brands.

Rather also owns Lew’s, Strike King Lures, Salmo and Fox fishing companies.

This was February of 2021.  I guess I just paid more attention since I rep for Quantum/Zebco.  I know some high up people at Lew’s and their issues are on going.  I have been with Gator Guards for 15 years and Yamamoto for 20.  I repped Live Target through a rep group I am associated with.  Maybe I’m the bad luck piece.  ??. FYI I would hope their is no change in quality since all of Yamamoto baits are manufactured, packaged and shipped out of Page, Arizona.  I have never agreed with cheapening the price.  The Yamamoto line of baits are what I consider premium quality and it’s always the consumers choice to buy a cheaper brand.  Those who fish Yamamoto regularly all agree the price is worth it.

Gary Yamamoto is GYCB, he can sell his business to whomever he chooses. Gary had his hand in the creation of his products as only he can do, without him it’s just another brand without innovation.

Thank you Gary for all your successful products we enjoy using everyday.

Normally, when firms buy other companies, especially private companies (if that was the case), they provide incentives for key employees to stick around for a while.  So I wouldn't write them off just yet, unless you have some inside information to the contrary.

Haha maybe I should go buy 100 bags of senkos that were made under Gary's setup, just in case these new guys change it and screw it up.

Overall, acquisitions scare me personally.

Well our acquisition was definitely the exception to that then ?

Sorry to hear it.  In some cases, companies buy other companies to, inter alia, acquire their customer base or to take out a competitor.  In those cases, the target company employees are just an afterthought. Relatively rare in tech acquisitions of startups.
