What situations do you use each of them? Do you consider them interchangeable? Any other tips tricks are greatly appreciated as well! 

A spinnerbait is a faster approach for me than a chatterbait. I can reel it substantially slower and keep it closer to the bottom than a spinnerbait.

 

I still use both regularly though.

 

I don’t see as many people using a spinnerbait that I used to. I think the fish have seen more chatterbaits. Because of this, I think the spinnerbait has been more effective recently on pressured waters. Just my local observation.

Spinners for me are used in the upper part of the water column...skimming across submerged weed-tops, across shallow flats, etc.

Chatters are for deeper presentations...sometimes down in the weeds long as they're not too thick.

These two were caught on a chartreuse/white chatter about 8'-10' down.

 

 

A chatterbait for me is much more versatile and not really season/condition specific- I have not had the same year round success with a spinnerbait.

I almost always have both tied on. They can be interchangeable at times, and almost complete opposites at others. They are both very versatile, and can be fished in several ways. You mostly tailor a chatter with the trailer, and a spinnerbait with the blade(s), and that is usually the key. I usually have a plan that works, but sometimes the fish have different ideas. I really like fishing spinnerbaits, and dislike fishing chatters, but the dumb things get the job done better than anything else sometimes. 

In my quest for big brown bass I fish both baits,

but don't really use them interchangeably.

Vibrating jig is best for me early & late season in cool to even cold water conditions.

And the spinnerbaits don't get wet until the water's quite a bit warmer.

Not to say either will not get bites at other times,

just that this when I use them the most.

The spinnerbait has been one of my favorite go to lures for a long time.  I always have at least one tied on.  The chatterbait was as good as the spinnerbait 3 years ago for a couple of months.  Since then I can rarely catch a fish on one of them.

This my personal preference only that’s dictated by where I’ve had success with each.
 

Grass? Chatterbaits

Wood? Spinners

 

 

I use spinnerbaits along rip rap on windy days . Fish em high and fast snaping them for Smallies. Been fishing spinnerbaits a long time and dont use a chatter bait alot. I use the Rage blade along ledges at the dams and do pretty well. But the Spinnerbait is my go to .

This is the easiest breakdown I could give. They both work in a ton of situations, but these are the only 2 factors that would make me reach for one or the other.

Same here. I would add that on just a cast and retrieve in deeper water, I have better luck with chatterbaits.  You would think it would be the opposite. 

I prefer some chop and brighter skies or dirty water with spinnerbaits as I don’t want them to get a great look at it…it’s not the most natural looking thing.  If it’s fairly slick and/or cloudy, I’ll opt for a chatterbait, a swim jig or another lure type altogether…IMO there are better options than a spinnerbait in those conditions.  I typically fish spinnerbaits above the bass (unless slow rolling) but they can be fished high or low in the column depending on the blades and trailer which can add lift.  I don’t get married to a certain type of cover as I haven’t found the cover type to be a limiting factor.  The vibration and/or silhouette can make dark colors in either great in low light or night conditions.

I never try to replace one with the other, I use them to complement each other. Other than not throwing a chatterbait around "wood" I fish them pretty much the same.

 

I throw them both winter, spring, summer, or fall. Morning, noon, or night.
