While I love Spots and Smallmouths, it was vastly easier for me to catch my first 5lb Smallmouth and 6lb Alabama Bass than it was for me to catch my 10.6lb PB LGM.   I spend the majority of my time fishing looking for another DD LGM these days on my home lake as a number of them have been caught over the years.   I got an 8lb in August, but the next closest were several 6lb fish, and a few dozen 5lb+ fish over the last several months of fishing 4-5 days a week.   I've caught one LGM over 10lbs in 25yrs + of Bass fishing.    When you think about what somebody like WRB did it boggles the mind.   A 10lb Bass in the flesh is remarkable in every way.

As both a freshwater and saltwater angler, I've never found anything that was as hard to pursue and catch as DD LGM Bass.   They will always be Mount Everest of the fishing universe in my book even though Spotted Bass, and Sailfish are my favorite fish to catch.

My order of importance:

1. Timing/luck

2. Methodical approach and fishing significantly slower and more deliberate

3. Fishing big fish baits, most times that means baits that don't get hit by smaller fish.

4. While highly debatable, I'll never stop believing that the best chance to catch big Bass is at night

5. Religious devotion to checking line, knots, and preparing for where a fish might break you off in

I haven't caught as many DD as many members here, but I do luck in to a few DD every year.  I am a firm believer in time on the water and luck.  Unfortunately I don't get many days to fish, but I start early and leave late on the days I can get on the water.  Most days are made up of 12 hours of bad luck combined with 5 minuets of good luck.  I just don't know when the good luck is going to start.

I haven't had much success fishing slower, most of my biggest bass have come while fishing faster moving baits.  I am working on learning to fish slow, but it is not in my DNA.  I have caught all of my DD bass fishing the same baits I would fish to catch small bass.  Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, topwater and worms.  I never fish at night, but I am fanatical about making sure my line, knots, and other gear is in good shape for when the big one bites.

I believe location is the most important factor for catching DD bass.  If I am catching dinks, I don't stick around.  It is hard to get lucky, when there aren't any big bass where my lure is.  To be honest, there is only one word besides dumb luck that best describes my success with DD bass.

MEXICO.

I have a hard time applying ^this^ in the water I fish. I have a great memory for the biggest bass I've caught. On the four bodies of water I fish regularly, I could show you where I caught my biggest bass, as well as sharing their size, time of day, lure, etc. So, naturally, I cast to those spots again and again, but I rarely strike gold at the same spot twice. Likewise, I can be catching 16-inchers and suddenly hook a five-pounder in the same spot. Changes in latitude, changes in bass attitude, I guess.

A slight “aside,” but on the subject of “The Hawg Hunters,” JJ just posted this catch within the past hour - 9.07 lbs SMB; 22.5” x 20.125”

Also caught an 8+ the night before. Says he’s putting in 15-16 hrs each day/night chasing these big smallies.

Those smallmouth are ridiculous! They look more like a bluegill in shape.

I had the same thought.
