Brother, You surely made @Log Catcher proud of ya with that one. ? We've all been there. Sometimes ya hook 'em just right, a little off center, and they even run sideways on ya. That was a dandy on the second swing.

That one was about the same size as a log I caught this week on a lipless crankbait. LOL

  • The trick is to take five steps back and swing for the fences while screaming "LET'S GOOO" at the top of your lungs. Perfect hookset every time.

  • Makes me think of the 11+ fish Brandon Cobb caught off a bed in the Elites at Fork.  He stuck the fish and he was 2 biscuits away from getting pulled overboard.  After all these years I still get a ru

For me it really depends on the bait im fishing. I tend to be lift and reel though with most presentations. My biggest change is in Pike infested waters. This will get me setting hooks harder and more frequently than anything else, and once set i really lean into the fish so it cant get the line in its mouth to bite me off. I admittedly miss/lose some bass because of this.

Just the other night I was out in the Everglades and caught two 8 pounders and one 7 pounder, all back to back. Each hit was sudden. Those kinda hits when all is calm, quiet and then the rod goes bump and the line just stops! No time to think. The whole scene played out chaotically, from start to finish. I couldn’t tell ya what kind of hooksets I used lol What I can tell you is that I did whatever I needed to do to get those fish landed!

Completely forgot about this hookset with a jig & heavy casting gear.

Not one of my finer moments, but there was carnage.

Did manage to redeem myself on the next cast.

Thought of this thread today after setting the hook into a log, TWICE!!! ?‍♂️ First time there was a dink still on after I poked the hook off the wood. Hook point came out TDC and buried into the log he was hiding under. He's been placed on concussion protocol. Second swing, different log, I missed the fish and landed a chunk of log. Opened up a 4/0 flippin hook a bit both times. #STRAIGHTBRAIDBRIGADE!!!

Side note: I like these $6 RiverRuns gloves nearly as well as the $30 Fish Monkey gloves they replaced. Factor in the cost difference, I like 'em a whole bunch better.

I'm beginning to see a trend here. LOL. The old saying hooksets are free ain't zactly true. They've cost me several hundred over the years.

Slamming a hookset with the baits I use is more or less just asking to lose the bait and the fish too lol

I don't really fish skirted jigs, mostly just chatterbaits, swimbaits, jerkbaits, lipless cranks, and ned/wacky rigs. All of those are more 'sweep and lean into it' type hooksets in my hands. I don't often lose a fish, and when I do it's usually either a massive gar or a tiny baby bass (bone density of the gar, no leverage on a small bass). I think if I were throwing more jigs I'd have a different habit.

Hooksets are free until they arent....then its the unlucky lottery if its going to run you only $2, $20 or a dry set of clothes. We wont talk about fancy swimbaits.

Hooksets have cost me a few rods. Set into a bridge, an unnoticed overhead limb, and lost one to a high stick. Also had a musky bite me off on a sweep hookset, and the rod unloaded into the trolling motor.

I swing for the hills. I also have my drag set so if I set into a snag it will slip. Which I do tend to do a lot.
