I need a new Jig rod ...

Featured Replies

I fish from a kayak 99% of the time, so I'm looking for something in the 7'3" range since anything longer gets a little unwieldy.  Pitching/flipping/casting/swimming 3/8-1oz jigs, and maybe some light punching in deep grass.  Will be using 30lb or 50lb braid on a Daiwa Tatula SV 7.3:1.  I'm partial to Daiwa and St. Croix but open to suggestions in the $150-200 range.

Looking at ...

St. Croix Victory Flip'n 7'3" HMF 3/8-1oz

Daiwa Tatula (cork handle) 7'3" MHF 3/8-1oz

Thanks!

  • I just ordered the 7’1” skipping rod also. I don’t need It and I don’t even know how to skip a jig! But I figure i can’t go wrong with an elite rod and a huk shirt for $90!

  • I've been throwing that bait and others like it on a $100 Tatula XT 7'3" H and have had no issues socking home a 6/0 Beast hook.

Tatula Elite 7'3" arrived yesterday, paired with an SV.  This is going to be a great all-purpose stick, even with 3/8-1/2oz jigs, swim jigs, etc.  Can't believe Midway had that sale!

I use the Tatula cork 6'10" and its been great. I was surprised to see someone didn't particularly care for the 7'3" model on a recent thread though

St. Croix Victory should suit you well. The victories are nice rods. If you’re only using it for “light” punching, you may want to consider the 7’3” MHF. I like medium heavies for all but the thickest gnarliest cover. Another thing I’d consider is the Mojo Bass line from St. Croix. Not quite as nice as the Victories, but I think they can be a better value relative to cost.

Never used the Tatula rods but I hear high praises sung about them.

At that size the Dobyns Fury 7'3 mag heavy is very hard to beat for jigs.

Falcon Cara “heavy cover jig” rod. 7’4”, 1/2-1 oz. Light tip, plenty of butt. Great for pitching 3/8-1/2 oz jigs with a trailer. I use it for bigger swim jigs.  Today I had a 3/4 football jig on it. Really good rod.

Agree the Victory Marshall 7’3” MHF May be a better all around use jig & worm rod.

10% discount available.

If you are going to buy a Daiwa in the 150-200 range, get the Tat elite (non ags). It is a meaningful upgrade from the regular Tatula. They are 179, but have been on sale in lots of places lately for 149. At one point I was thinking about getting the Rebellion (199, beautiful rod) and did a deep dive on HVF vs SVF and it appeared that the SVF blank was better. So I bought another Tat elite. They are my favorite rods besides going to a smaller maker like Kistler (who I'm a big big fan of). Although it matters less if you are going to be on braid; other things might be more important.

Consider one other thing before deciding - are you really going to be throwing 3/8-1/2 oz jigs with a small trailer, or 3/4-1oz with a big trailer? It'll make a huge difference on whether you need a MH or a H.

Last comment, this price point is really competitive and everyone will push as much awesomeness as they can to hit that sub-200 price point.

I just ordered a Tatula Elte Casting rod 6'9" H skipping/jig rod from Midway on sale for $109 for my yak and tight quarter wading and bank fishing. Easier to skip with a shorter rod on the yak, and less chance of dunking a reel when I choke up on the rod to lip a fish. They have 7'1" and 7'3" in H and MH for the same price in stock still.

What a deal!  Ordered the 7'1" H just now for $92 shipped, hard to beat that.  I'm always tinkering with gear so I'll probably end up with a couple more rods to try.

Sweet! I ordered this afternoon and it's already in transit.

P.S. Go back to the product page where you ordered and click the "Rebate Available" icon highlighted in green. It'll take you to a rebate pdf. Send it in with the 4 items requested and $5 for a Daiwa/Huk performance hoodie.

Kistler ZBone 7’3” heavy/fast if you can squeeze out the extra funds. If not, KLX or Helium in the same length, power, and action would be closer to your budget

The Money Maker is rated MH/Fast. It fishes on the upper end of MH. I enjoy that rod immensely. I fish it right alongside my BLX and Adrena Rods, it runs right with them. Brian.

How does the MagMH compare to the 7'3 MH F?

I just looked at the lineups. They used to call it a Mag MH in the Lancer series. It's now listed as MH in both series. It's the same blank. It's a stout MH with a nice tip. Great jig/trig rod.

Anything else you think this Rod would be good for?

Definitely. I never take their quoted "purposes" seriously, so I try new ones out a number of different ways and find out what's what. I multipurpose so many of my rods with judicious line choices and drag adjustments.

Fish it awhile and let it tell you what it does well.

How would It be for just pitching around 3/8oz finesse jigs like the Luke clausen finesse Dirty jig?

Just trying to see where I can make It fit in the arsenal.

I have Dobyns DX746 I use for pitching 1/2oz t-rig with creatures and big worms. I just got the Orochi perfect pitch for the same things but mainly for 1/2oz-3/4oz jigs as well.
Daiwa Rebellion 7’3” MHF for lighter t-rig, senkos, etc.

Originally planned to use the Rebellion for the finesse jigs. Maybe this skipping rod will be the ticket.

Tempting. Do you think it could handle a Megabass Magdraft Freestyle? Was gonna get a Falcon Eye Crossser for it, based on board feedback, but at $90 this seems like a great deal. 1 1/2 ounce is Tatula’s high end of lure range, Freestyle rigged is about 1.6 ounce on 1/2 ounce beast hook.
