I might have worded that wrong, I have a problem with people who get into fishing and don't respect the environment around them and keep undersized fish and litter. Those are the people who were never supposed to get into our sport.

Right but nothing separates the people who got into fishing during the COVID period and anglers who fished before COVID. Littering and keeping tiny fish probably seems more prevalent simply because there are more people

Biggest problem with the new crop of anglers is they never had a mentor or person show them what NOT to do EVER and they kinda disrespect the water.

 

I can't count the number of times I've reeled in 100 yards of braid or 25 lb mono attached to a crappie jig that was just cut and left to ruin prime cover.

 

These types of things are mind boggling to me and consistently make fishing difficult and cost me some nice lures when I'm trying to get in the zone /into my happy place.

 

I'm fine with the new anglers and all the fishing pressure but please learn some etiquette and environmental stewardship.

We're talking about respect for the environment. One doesn't need a mentor to teach them that. That's done through upbringing and other external and internal factors which are too broad for me to want to delve into. Has nothing to do with COVID

It's not about winning or losing. I think I'm probably failing to express my thoughts coherently enough. Crickety mentioned new places where other people don't fish. Maine has a ton of water, lots of untouched territory. She's blessed to fish where she does. Of course we have our public lakes. That's not what I'm talking about. Scouring Google maps for gems like Crickety can find, where other people don't fish, isn't a thing I've experienced either here or in my home state of Illinois. If you find a body of water that's not one of our bigger boaty public lakes that everyone already knows about, and you go check it out, you find it posted private and/or fenced. You zoom in and find it on private business or farm property. You find it in a private residential area. Or you find that it's a park or nature preserve that's been beaten and beaten and beaten by fishermen. We do not really have the option of untouched territory where other anglers are not. Unless of course you can gain permission at these private places or know someone. I don't even bother to ask. The world and its people are crazy.

True, but I'd rather see kids fishing than becoming antisocial video game vegetables. There's enough of those already. I imagine most of the ones who stick with it will straighten out over time. Can't do much about the numb skulls though. They'll always be there.

I don't play video games often but used to play the hell outta em. Fishing actually got me away from gaming

I fish by day and wake my fiance by night screaming into the mic playing Call of Duty. Those 12 year olds have told me every which way my mother is a promiscuous lady.

@ironbjorn, I understand that Maine abounds in water, but not people, and since we're the oldest state population-wise, many Mainers are too old to fish anymore. Yes, this gives me an advantage.

 

However, you have the Great Lakes and you also have Michigan sitting on top of you. The U.P. is a lot like Maine. Sitting on top of the U.P. is Ontario, which is where fishers, if they've lived good lives, go when they die. I've had many 100-bass days in Ontario and two 200-bass days. Rather than fritter your fishing time on local lakes that are pounded, perhaps you should gather your free time and drive to the great fishing that's within your reach.

Would you extend that offer to me? My inlaws got a cabin up there on a lake where I there's no fish... and then I see 6 pound largies absolutely ignore everything I've thrown and barely even take the time to check out something I've thrown. Bumped into some decent smallies recently there, but only because I wasn't relegated to the dock or kayak, family pontoon saved the day haha.

This right here is the real deal, I can't believe the amount of junk left on banks now, always been an issue, but its worse now and not just because youngins are out there bassin. Grown ass idiots are plentiful, the thing it has to do with covid is more idiots found another place to leave a mess at when they got into fishing because they were tired of quarantining in their dirty messy rooms. 

 

And the mentor stuff does contribute to a degree, I have been snagged on more line than ever before. its confusing because I'm like "I can feel it bouncing around but I'm stuck..." I've spent time trying to untangle and cut up wads of braid and old fat mono stuck in laydowns in the water because people don't know what there doing, I often end a fishing trip with pockets full of trash and line to throw away (not my own).

The pressure is why things like BFS are getting more popular. I'm excited to see how the industry will change. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I am on the bank they went in front of me after I just caught a fish, how I am I too close?  If I can roll cast into there kayak they can see me, plus I am 6'8" kinda or hard not to see me.  Point is its been getting worse and there is no education on educate in these situation because these devices are so cheap and available, covid is certainly to blame for this, plus lack of lakes close to me is 50 minutes away//

Let me clarify, I wasn't specifically saying that "you" were too close.  I just wanted to indicate what my general rule of thumb is on the water with other watercraft.

 

I don't think you were in the wrong.  I wasn't there either though.  I will admit that sometimes I don't see certain things on shore when I'm in my boat until I'm pretty close.  Most of our lakes are lined with trees where people are legally able to fish though too, which breaks up their outline.

Valid point, I didn't think about a tree line, no tress just small stones you can see people on the bank for 100s of yards..

Funny! However, you don't need me to adopt you. You're close enough to fish Maine. New Hampshire and Vermont too!

The biggest issue I have no is not having the time to get out on the yak. job,2 young girls, wife, bills, everything else in life.... I sneak out when I can and its usually about the time the girls go to bed. 

 

This leaves no time to yak, and no time to explore new waters. I'm hoping with the increase in daylight I can at least further explore the banks I can get to. A little bit more of a walk into the woods beyond where most people stop might make a difference. 

 

And I'm starting to venture into tackle making (not soft plastics yet, no ventilation) so hopefully I can start throwing stuff just different enough to get a bite. 

 

We have 4 pages about tougher fishing and pressure and then we'll have other threads where people say they have thrown a jig for 40 years and it still catches fish... on the same water the other guys have been throwing a jig for 40 years and catchin'em.

 

VT is just a little too far, I can hit some southeastern NH and the part of ME where the inlaws' cabin is. The girls will grow up and hopefully I can fish better times and waters and actually on the water in a few years.
