How to deal with Tennis Elbow

Featured Replies

My tennis elbow is really starting to bother me lately.

By the time I’m heading back to the ramp it’s killing me.   It seems to effect me the most when I’m doing a lot of flipping and pitching.

Is there anything out there you guys are doing to remedy the pain??

I'm in my early 20s but I do suffer from this occasionally. Most recently in the summertime, I workout frequently and fish so eventually the soreness and pain catches up lol, on and off the water. If the tennis elbow isn't severe I try to stretch it out and go easy on things but if it's bad I will apply icyhot lidocaine patches on the area and give it a rest. Lidocaine can be found at almost any pharmacy/drug store. I've even seen them in places like walmart. Also painkillers could ease it aswell.

Hope that helps.

You need a strap.  https://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Tennis-Elbow-Support-Black/dp/B0027VOS8U/ref=sr_1_10?crid=IX3PHXDWQ7KE&keywords=tennis+elbow+strap&qid=1695600177&sprefix=tennis+elbow+strap%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-10

Wear it when you go fishing, then take some Ibuprofen or Aleve when you get off the water.

That may take care of it, but honestly, the best way to cure it, is to stop fishing for 4-6 months.

Thanks Glenn!  That was the answer I didn’t want to hear but figured that was probably the remedy.  I’ll get the strap to finish out this year then I’ll take it easy until spring.  I really wanted to up my winter fishing this year but probably best I give it a rest.

Years ago, I was suffering with that as well.  While wearing that same brace, my boss had us out digging post holes for a new, slit rail fence.  I used a manual post hole digger for a few holes.  A day later, I realized my elbow no longer hurt.  Whatever it was, that motion cured it.

I agree with Glenn on the strap. My left forearm used to ache something fierce after throwing big swimbaits for hours. So I researched and found specific stretches and exercises to help relieve the pain. I did those stretches and excercises for a couple months with no relief, but did not stop fishing.

I picked up a strap and after two or three trips I was completely painfree. I wore the strap for eight or ten more trips without pain, so I put it in my dry box and if I ever get a hint of pain it's going back on my arm. Goodluck.

I can only hope one of these happens to me!

Biggest thing I can recommend is to learn to fish with either hand.  My right hand is my master hand, but I  can do 90% of my fishing with either hand.

I'll be 77 in three weeks and still go 9 hour tournaments with minimal discomfort.

Pills, straps, etc. all help, but I haven't had to use in several years, except after throwing an A-Rig all day.

Gotta rest it sometime. When I had shoulder issues, I forced myself to stop fishing for quite some time…. Multiple months. Then focused on strengthening the shoulders through physical therapy.

Today, as long as I live an active life, keep good posture, and work to keep the shoulders strong, I have little to no issues and can fish pain free for 9 hours or more

Tennis elbow aka tendinitis is an overuse injury that there is no fixing without laying off for a long time and easing back in slowly.  All you can do is treat the symptoms and decide if you are going to lay off or a while or not.

I wouldn't expect anything more from you...or myself, for that matter.

I turned 40 almost two months ago so I’m over the hill and horrible dad jokes are now acceptable for me.

I'm a mechanic with Popeye forearms.  I've had tennis elbow in both elbows (at different times).  Get a strap like Glenn mentioned.   Put it on, not super tight, just kinda snug and leave it on.   I slept with mine on.   If it is tennis elbow the strap will provide pretty much instant relief.   In all cases it took me a couple months wearing the strap to get over it.   This was while working every day....using my arms a bunch.   When I had it I ate Ibuprofen like it was chicklets.   It's been years since I had it.   A while back my Dr recommend Voltaren for my shoulder.  It's a topical Arthritis medication, but it's a good anti inflammatory.   I apply some to my shoulder 3 times a day and I'm pretty much pain free.  (torn labrum)

My body's torn apart from working in the trades. 3 shoulder surgeries, a bad hip, ankle surgery etcetera. I'm done with surgeries. There are other options available.

Every so often I get a flare up of tennis elbow   I can barely hold up a coffee cup. I'll take Alene for two days and it goes away. I usually don't have it again for months

Good stuff, thanks dude!

Been there, done that.   Rest is the only short term cure.  Using lighter rods in the future.
